Modernising opera is vitally important. We need to conserve and protect such a precious art form so as to not let it fade away and die. If opera is going to attract new audiences, it needs to be an accurate reflection of contemporary society in order to be understandable and relevant. This does create many challenges for directors and music directors, because treading the balance between respecting the original music and narrative, and making the necessary tough decisions and changes that will attract a contemporary audience, is incredibly difficult.

In yet another attempt to democratise opera, Opera Undone, the new strand of Islington's King's Head Theatre's celebrated opera offering, brings two radical interpretations of Puccini's Tosca and La bohème to the Trafalgar Studios. These are the first productions to debut in the West End.

Opera Undone: Tosca & La bohème will run at Trafalgar Studios 2 from 5 February to 7 March 2020. Adam Spreadbury-Maher, Artistic Director of the King's Head Theatre, will also direct the production, with musical direction from David Eaton. Opera Undone: Tosca & La bohème will have a national press night on Tuesday 11 February 2020.
Casting Announced For Opera Undone: TOSCA and LA BOHEME At Trafalgar Studios
The Olivier Award-nominated producers of the 2017 smash-hit La bohème, announce the full cast for the Puccini double-bill, Opera Undone: Tosca & La bohème. The production will run at Trafalgar Studios 2 from 5 February to 7 March 2020. Adam Spreadbury-Maher, Artistic Director of the King's Head Theatre, will also direct the production, with musical direction from David Eaton. Opera Undone: Tosca & La bohème will have national press nights on Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 February 2020 for the two casts.

The King's Head Theatre, following on from the exciting news that the company will be moving in 2018 to a purpose built, permanent space in the heart of Islington Square, and Joe C Brown will present the West End transfer of their sell-out production of Puccini's La boh me. Adam Spreadbury-Maher, Artistic Director of the King's Head Theatre, will direct the production, which is running at Trafalgar Studios 2 from 6 December 2017 to 6 January 2018.
