RAPHAEL CRYSTAL is an award-winning composer (Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Score, Kuni-Leml), arranger (Downtown Theatre Award for Outstanding Adaptation, Vagabond Stars), and conductor (Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival Awards for Outstanding Musical Direction). As a pianist he is known for his improvisational skills in “a multitude of musical styles” (NY Times). His credits as composer/lyricist include The Bourgeois Gentleman (Jean Cocteau Rep), MegaHeroes (Birmingham Children’s Theatre), and material for Ripley’s Believe-It-Or-Not in Times Square. He founded and directed the acclaimed musical theatre program at the University of Alabama, and has also taught at Ball State University and Marymount Manhattan. He has been a guest composer and musical director at NYU Tisch, Temple University, and Barnard College. He is a member of ASCAP, The Dramatists Guild, and AFM Local 802, and an alumnus of the BMI/Lehman Engel Musical Workshop.
