Awards were presented last night to 34 outstanding actors, directors, designers, choreographers, musicians, and 5 visiting productions by the Boston Theater Critics Association (BTCA) at the 40th Anniversary Elliot Norton Awards ceremony, held at the Huntington Theatre in Boston.

The Huntington announces the cast and creative team for a stunning new production of The Bluest Eye based on the American classic novel by Toni Morrison. Written by Lydia R. Diamond (Stick Fly on Broadway and The Huntington, Smart People at The Huntington), the play reimagines Morrison's haunting and powerful first book for the stage.

Portland Playhouse Offers JOY (COMES) IN THE MOURNING
The festival, which will consist of both in-person (as CDC protocols allow) and virtual events, kicks off with a welcoming address from keynote speaker Sarah Bellamy, Artistic Director of Minneapolis' Penumbra Theatre. Bellamy will continue to engage with arts leaders throughout the festival in a series of workshops focusing on the intersection of racial healing, social justice and theatre making.

BWW Review: BARBECUE: A Dysfunctional Family Roast
BARBECUE is a play about which one cannot say too much without ruining its considerable effect. Here's the minimalist FYI, things you need to know but that won't give anything away. It is written by Robert O'Hara, directed by Summer L. Williams, and features an ensemble cast of ten actors who all give great performances and disappear into their richly drawn characters. Taking place on a raised pavilion in a pastoral park, the lovely setting belies the serious nature of the subjects (substance abuse, family dysfunction, race) that BARBECUE serves up on a platter. And one more thing - it's a comedy.

Producing Artistic Director and Founder of Israeli Stage, Guy Ben-Aharon helmed a staged reading of Swedish-Tunisian playwright/author Jonas Hassen Khemiri's I CALL MY BROTHERS last night in Nordic Hall at the Scandinavian Cultural Center in West Newton. The first-ever theatrical performance at SCC was in partnership with the Center for Arabic Culture and featured a quartet of Boston actors: Ramona Lisa Alexander, Greg Maraio, Nael Nacer, and Gigi Watson.
