Lyric Opera of Kansas City Has Announced 2020-2021 Season
Lyric Opera of Kansas City General Director and CEO Deborah Sandler today announced the company's 2020-2021 season. It features four mainstage productions, including The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess and The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, both of which are being performed on a Lyric Opera of Kansas City stage for the first time. Two all-time favorites known for incomparable melodies - Verdi's beloved La traviata and Bizet's passionate Carmen - round out the extraordinarily diverse season. The Kansas City Symphony Orchestra will accompany all performances at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Pop-Up Opera to Offer Reimagined LA TRAGEDIE DE CARMEN
Opera return this autumn with a reimagining of Bizet's famous masterpiece La Tragedie de Carmen. In 1981 Peter Brook collaborated with composer Marius Constant to reimagine this emotive opera and, now, Opera will stage this stripped back incarnation. Sung in French with Opera's signature 'silent movie' captions in English, this dark and thrilling piece may not always be as you expect.

Upon first glance, the sterile, white sets that greet the audience once the curtain rises on BalletMet's "Carmen.maquia" might have many theatergoers double-checking their programs. Indeed, the barren stage, interrupted by amorphous masses that appear to be constructed from thin layers of crepe paper, in no way resembles the streets of Seville, Spain.
Yet it is on this blank canvas that the dancers of BalletMet create color through movement and emotion, effectively painting a vibrant, Pablo Picasso-esque portrait of humanity.

Nicholas Hytner to Direct Cuba-Set Adaptation of Bizet's CARMEN in 2016
The Daily Mail writes that Nicholas Hytner has zeroed in on his first big project following his departure from the National Theatre -- a new version of Bizet's CARMEN with book by Lucy Prebble. Hytner led an informal read through of the new adaptation last weekend, and the production is aiming for the West End in 2016.

CARMEN (book by Norman Allen, lyrics by Jack Murphy, and directed by Gabriel Barre), currently running at the Karlin Theatre in Prague and starring the Czech Republic's biggest pop star Lucie Bila, has broken all box office records there and is now the biggest hit in the history of Czech theatre according to local media.
