Theatre Row Presents THE VANITY
The Vanity is a stylized, darkly humorous, period melodrama, which plays like a marriage of The Picture of Dorian Gray, Sunset Boulevard and Valley of the Dolls full of high drama and dirty secrets. It's 1947 and Julian Gray, a beautiful but sheltered young Plantation heir decides to start a new life in Hollywood. He finds himself the object of all sorts of hungry attention and the great director Hilton Wheeler casts him as the lead in a major motion picture. In spite of a promising future as a movie star, Julian falls in love with Stella, a makeup girl on the set of his first film. All hell breaks loose, when Julian inherits a mysterious Victorian vanity table from a distant, unknown relative and the vanity is possessed by a powerful demon. Julian is offered the chance to maintain his infamous good looks indefinitely, as long as he agrees to forsake love in favor of hedonistic pleasure. Mr. Gray is faced with an impossible choice, and is tempted in all directions by an array of technicolor characters.
BWW Review: TINK! Soars Beyond Neverland
'OMG! Mom and Dad are being such phonies, so I'm going to run away and marry a pirate. Before you think about that too much, let me distract you with this show-stopping production number!' Actually 'TINK!' wasn't as vacuous as all that, though - true to the exclamation point in its title - it did tend to deliver narrative details in bold plot points. Still, Tony Marino's barrel-of-laughs filled book, aided by Lena Gabrielle's tuneful score, with an assist from Greg Kerestan on lyrics ensured that 'TINK!' stood out as one of the more delectable treats in this year's New York Musical Festival smorgasbord.
Douglas Sills & Christine Sherrill to Star in KISS ME, KATE at Shakespeare Theatre Company
It's not just 'another op'nin' of another show,' it's the classic musical the Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC) was destined to produce: Kiss Me, Kate. STC Associate Artistic Director Alan Paul, director of last season's smash hit Man of La Mancha-the best-selling production in the Company's history-and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Director, Resident Musical) helms Kiss Me, Kate, with choreography by Michele Lynch (Washington National Opera's Show Boat).
BWW REVIEW: Ogunquit's VICTOR/VICTORIA Says Vive la Difference
VICTOR/VICTORIA's gender-bending exploration of sexual identity and orientation may have seemed fresh, even daring, in 1982, but by the time it hit Broadway in 1995 it was already a bit tame. Today in a 20th anniversary production at Maine's Ogunquit Playhouse, it feels downright quaint when compared to the courage of Caitlyn Jenner and the recent Supreme Court ruling finally making Marriage Equality the law of the land.
STAGE TUBE: Heather Parcells Celebrates 'Eliza Doolittle Day' with 'Loverly' NYC Escapades
In 1916, King George V declared the May 20th 'Eliza Doolittle Day' (at least in the heroine's imagination, as she sings in MY FAIR LADY's Act I song 'Just You Wait'). Below, see Broadway vet Heather Parcells' modern twist on 'Wouldn't It Be Loverly?', as she and fellow actors Nicloas Dromard and Denis Lambert galavant around New York City in honor of Eliza!
