Penguin Rep Theatre opened the Off-Broadway premiere of A Sabbath Girl: A New Musical, with book by Cary Gitter, lyrics by Neil Berg and Cary Gitter, music by Neil Berg, and conceived and directed by Joe Brancato last night, Sunday, July 28th, and BroadwayWorld was there to capture the festivities. David Rowen, producer of YouTube series davidrowen/creative, assembled a diverse group of Broadway/theatre performers to remake and put a spin on the classic gospel medley, 'Joyful, Joyful,' from the Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill film, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. The video is the creative element of a larger project to promote positive social change, and to raise awareness and charity for Teen and Police Service (TAPS) Academy, which is a program that connects at-risk youth and law enforcement to build trust and understanding between the two groups.

INTO THE SUN follows three young English friends who go off to the trenches of World War I. It is the saga of the soldiers, their families, and their lovers - and the way that war changes a generation. The protagonist distills the arc of his generation, moving from initial enthusiasm for the war to public protest against it. Loosely based on the lives of several British War Poets, the musical features some songs that take their lyrics directly from poems by Wilfred Owen, Rupert Brooke, Siegfried Sassoon and others. The score blends the styles of pop, rock, and contemporary folk.

'Finding My Voice' 'I still can't hear you' echoed in my head as I left rehearsal the other day. 'I still can't hear you.' Among the notes from Liesl after our first stumble-through were the repeated reminders about my volume and size. 'You're not in an independent film,' she said. Despite doing my homework, tightening my objectives, and warming up my voice: three weeks in and they still can't hear me.
