BWW Review: Seattle Rep's A DOLL'S HOUSE, PART 2 Fails to Connect

A few years back I was fortunate enough to see Lucas Hnath's wonderful play, "A Doll's House, Part 2" on Broadway and was blown away. So, when the Seattle Rep announced it as part of their season I was absolutely thrilled. Then when they announced the powerhouse cast of some of Seattle's finest actors, Pamela Reed, Michael Winters, Khanh Doan, and Laura Kenny in the play, I was over the moon. This should be a slam dunk! Which then begs the question from me, "What happened?" as the performance I saw last night felt stiff and disjointed at times as if the actors were simply reading from the script. It picked up a bit by the end, but this is certainly not what I've come to expect from the Rep.

Written by Tony Award nominee Lucas Hnath and directed by Seattle Rep Artistic Director Braden Abraham, A Doll's House, Part 2 runs March 15 - April 28, 2019 (opening night is March 20, 2019) on the Leo K. stage. Single tickets are on sale now (starting at $17) and are available through the Seattle Rep Box Office at 206.443.2222 or online at SeattleRep.org.

BWW Review: THE HUMANS ~ A Family's Sound And Fury, Signifying Everything

THE HUMANS, now at ASU Gammage in Tempe AZ, features a star-studded cast, but a confused and disappointing ending undoes what to that point has been a play infused with humanity, wit, and emotion.

Pennsylvania rubes visiting the Big Apple supply old-timey laughs to THE HUMANS, but the Twin Towers and Hurricane Sandy also lurk in Stephen Karam's drama.

BWW Review: THE HUMANS: 2016 Best Play Tour at Boch Shubert Center

The National Tour of the 2016 Tony Award-winning play THE HUMANS makes its Boston debut at the Boch Center Shubert Theatre. Playwright Stephen Karam, a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, is well-known to local theater audiences from his dark comedy SONS OF THE PROPHET, and SPEECH AND DEBATE. With humor and heart, THE HUMANS offers an in-depth look at the foibles and fears of the members of one family and how they help each other survive in an increasingly unforgiving world.
BWW Review: THE HUMANS at the Orpheum Theatre

THE HUMANS plays at Minneapolis' Orpheum through Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018. This Tony Award-winning show about a family gathering for Thanksgiving dinner in modern-day New York City provides a lot of food for thought.

BWW Review: THE HUMANS at Seattle Rep is a Searing Slice of Life but in a Hurry to Leave

Thanksgiving dinner is a tumultuous time for many of us as we attempt to spend an evening with our loved ones. Sure, we love our families but we don't always see eye to eye and as the wine flows and the turkey and yams fill our bellies, maybe our inhibitions and filters lower. That's the kind of dinner currently being served at the Seattle Rep as they host the beginning of the national tour of Stephen Karam's Tony Award winning play, The Humans . And while I love the tight dialog and raw honesty, the ending of the play does come across as a bit abrupt.
