BWW Review: 10,000 THINGS Doesn't Add Up to Much at Wilbury Group
by Robert Barossi - Oct 24, 2016
There is certainly something worthwhile about theater that pushes boundaries, tries new things, experiments and offers unique way to tell a story. The art form, in general, benefit from that kind of work. It benefits from work that expands the minds of an audience and tells them a story in a way that challenges them. On the other hand, Wilbury Group's second show of the year, 10,000 Things by Erik Ehn, proves how this kind of theater can instead leave an audience bored, confused or both.Â
BWW Review: OUT LOUD Theatre Brings Intense and Stunning DRACULA to Life
by Robert Barossi - May 9, 2016
Storytelling is something that, fundamentally, defies definition. Who is to say how a story should best be told? How many different ways have stories been passed down over the centuries? Whatever our own preferences are for storytelling forms and devices, there are countless others, often used in successful ways. In its three years of existence, OUT LOUD Theatre has at times defied conventional definitions of storytelling and developed their own unique style. With its spectacular use of that style, their current production of Dracula is a gorgeous example of the company's storytelling prowess, wrapped in a unique and surprising piece of theatrical art.

BWW Review: Epic Theatre Rules the Yard with THESE RUTHLESS BITCHES
by Andria Tieman - Sep 8, 2015
Epic Theatre kicks off their page to stage season with a delightfully catty update to Clare Boothe Luce classic The Women retitled THESE RUTHLESS BITCHES. Â All of the original themes are still present: loyalty to men, the notion of the Ideal Woman, but everything is slightly sideways in that this re-telling takes place in a Women's Prison. Â Comparisons to Orange is the New Black are obvious and easy to make, but telling the story of upper class women in a prison rather than a parlor works surprisingly well. Â Instead of being captive by the rules of society, which may not ring as true for the audience today, these women are literally captive by the legal system and have merely transferred their social hierarchies and rules to a more drab environment.

BWW Reviews: Epic Theatre's Season Closes with Suprisingly Safe ORLANDO
by Robert Barossi - Jun 7, 2015
Issues surrounding gender and gender equality have always been important and deserving of attention and discussion. At this moment, these issues seem to be especially at the forefront of our conversations across this country and beyond. It seems like the perfect moment for a play that focuses on these issues in a fascinating and engaging way. Unfortunately, the production at Epic Theatre of Sarah Ruhl's Orlando fails to fulfill it's potential for generating those important questions and conversations. It does the opposite, seemingly playing it safe and keeping those important issues at a great distance from the audience.
