BIO

Veteran lighting designer and UNC School of the Arts faculty member Norman Coates has been shaping the minds and talents of future Artist Leaders for more than 25 years. His creative projects have had a profound impact, from his lighting design on national and regional theatrical productions; to his leading role in the lighting of the White House portico for Halloween in 2015 and 2016; to his Winston-Salem Light Project, a now decade-long labor of love that illuminates architectural landmarks around the city each year. A gifted artist, educator, social entrepreneur and innovator, Norman strives to make the arts visible beyond the theater, and uses his craft and creativity as a way to improve the quality of life of everyone in a community.

DeLanna Studi, Cherokee performance artist and activist, shares a powerful, multi-faceted dramatic memoir in And So We Walked: An Artist's Journey Along the Trail of Tears. This frank, heartwarming and inspiring story recounts the experience of a contemporary Cherokee woman (Studi) who, with her father, embarks on an incredible 900-mile journey along the Trail of Tears to truly understand her own identity and the conflicts of her nation.

In an age of Instant Messenger, Snapchat and Twitter, many of us may have never experienced the quiet thrill of receiving a handwritten, personal letter. 84 Charing Cross Road is James Roose-Evans' adaptation of Helene Hanff's charming and very personal book of letters. It goes back to a time when people not only hand wrote correspondence, but had to buy their books from a physical bookshop, rather than clicking to purchase them online. The story is an account of the New York playwright's own twenty-year relationship with the manager of Marks & Co. bookshop, conducted entirely through letters.

Studi returns to The Armory to perform this solo show after a triumphant run as Marie Dorion, Sarah Astor and other roles in the two-year engagement of Astoria: Part One and Astoria: Part Two. Corey Madden, the executive director of the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, has been involved in the development of And So We Walked since initial research began in 2014 and comes to Portland to direct the production.
