Nicholas Kaminski is a rising musical theatre composer/lyricist whose songs are profoundly funny, witty, and poignant. With genres ranging from disco to rock to golden age musical theatre sendoffs, his music explores themes of love and connection in a modern world. It also asks questions like: “Will I ever be the person I’ve wanted to be?”, “Am I ready to step into the unknown?”, “Was taking my Equity card a good idea?”, and “Is it just me, or is Santa Claus kinda hot?”
Nicholas is the composer, lyricist, and book writer of his completely original musical, Starborn: A Disco Odyssey, which received a staged reading and cast recording at Surflight Theatre in 2018 and was performed at 54 Below in March 2020. Nicholas is also co-composer/lyricist with his father, Stephen Kaminski, for Big Famous, a musical about the true exploits of Polka King Jan Lewan. He has also composed music for animated shorts, cabaret pieces, musical theatre shorts, and standalone albums.

Nicholas Kaminski, whose self-titled show opened on Saturday at the Green Room 42, is a new writer who would have felt completely at home in the mountain resorts where clever and topical songs were created at a breakneck pace. I have had the pleasure of seeing M Kaminski sing his songs individually at Michael McAssey’s “Open Mac” at Pangea. They are always something fresh and unexpected. Seeing an entire evening of his work was something I was looking forward to. I’m happy to report he did not disappoint. Together with his friends, Staci Jo Johnson, Rachel Phalen, Jada Valenciaga, Bart Shatto, Kelsey Kaufman, Lauren Ranahan, and Aaron Remy, he delivered over a dozen well-crafted story songs that announce the arrival of a very individual new musical theatre voice. Mr. Kaminski has a talent for catchy melodies and wry, self-deprecating lyrics that have the elegance of Bock & Harnick combined with the bawdiness of William Finn.

Beach Haven's Surflight Theatre, under the leadership of Producing Artistic Director Steve Steiner, is back for its 70th show stopping season. The theatre's mainstage season opener is Irving Berlin's Holiday Inn, a song and dance spectacular based on the classic Bing Crosby/Fred Astaire film of the same name that features even more toe tapping tunes by one of America's most prolific songwriters.

The book is adapted by Bob Martin and Thomas Meehan from the 2003 film. This will be the second musical by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin that Surflight has produced this season having had The Wedding Singer in their 2018 summer lineup.
