BWW Review: Bartlett Sher's FIDDLER ON THE ROOF Is Transcendent ~ A Shining Event At ASU Gammage
In all the times that I have seen FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (and they have been many ~ whether on stage or film), I have never seen a production as inspired, imaginative, and moving in its staging as Bartlett Sher's. The vision of this Tony Award-winning director imbues this musical classic with a singular vitality and soulfulness that distinguishes it from its antecedents. Now appearing at ASU Gammage through February 2nd, the show is a stunning and magical mix of superb performances, Christopher Evans's dazzling and muscular choreography, and Michael Yeargan's vivid and ethereal set designs.

The national tour of Fiddler on the Roof brought some of that tradition to Thalia Mara Hall in Jackson, Mississippi on October 22nd. The tour's stop in Jackson opened Thalia Mara's Broadway in Jackson series season presented by Trustmark. The tour itself is presented by NETworks Presentations.

No doubt you will see tiaras, beautiful ball gowns, slippers made of glass, pumpkins, a Prince, and a clock striking midnight in the current touring production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella. Yes, the modern production keeps all those familiar things from the fairytale and the original 1957 musical starring Julie Andrews intact. However, this production - like the most recent Broadway revival on which it is based - features a new book by Douglas Carter Beane (2013 adaptation). He gives the audience new characters and a more sympathetic stepsister. He also provides the Prince with a story/personality and grants Cinderella the power to decide her own destiny. Put succinctly, there are many socio-political undertones within the story and the characters that inhabit it.
