BWW Interview: Actor Matt Gibson Shifts Focus to Film During Pandemic

The last time Mainers got to enjoy the work of actor Matt Gibson was last summer when he starred in Maine State Music Theatre’s Hello, Dolly! as Cornelius Hackl. The New York based actor with a string of Broadway and off-Broadway credits has spent the last year, writing and acting in film and sweeping the Film Festival circuit awards for DOGMATE, a short that Gibson has written and in which he stars together with Ken Jennings, Cadden Jones, and Monica L. Jones. The short, produced by Patrick Bishop of Bishops Gate Entertainment and co-directed by Mollie Vogt-Welch and Amanda Thickpenny has received thirteen honors at nine festivals so far, including three wins and one nomination for “Best Comedic Short,” one win and two nominations for “Best Acting Ensemble,” two nominations for “Best Actor “ for Gibson and one win and two nominations for “Best Supporting Actress” for Cadden Jones. DOGMATE, which has received a non-exclusive distribution deal, makes its next debut at The Cutting Room International Short Film Festival on December 5-6, 2020.
Pan Asian Repertory Theatre to Present SAYONARA at Theater Row's Clurman Theater

PAN ASIAN REPERTORY THEATRE continues its 38th Season with a re-imagining of the epic musical, James A. Michener's SAYONARA. This classic story of romance and the power of love to overcome the conflict between two clashing cultures, the US Military and a world-famous all female Takarazuka dance theatre, has a book by William Luce, lyrics by Hy Gilbert, music by George Fischoff, and is adapted from the novel by James A. Michener. Directed by Tisa Chang, with choreography by Rumi Oyama, and musical direction by Sarah Brett England; the production will begin previews on July 5, 2015 and run until July 26, 2015 at the Clurman Theatre at Theatre Row (410 W 42nd Street between 9th and Dyer). The official opening is on Thursday, July 9 at 7:30PM.

2012 Lotte Lenya Competition Winners Announced

Matthew Grills, tenor, of Rochester, N.Y, won the $15,000 First Prize in the finals of the 2012 Lotte Lenya Competition, held on April 21, 2012, at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. In a close contest, Justin Hopkins, bass-baritone of Philadelphia, and Jacob Keith Watson, tenor of Wynne, Ark., tied for Second Prizes of $10,000, and Megan Marino, mezzo-soprano of Malvern, Penn., was awarded the Third Prize of $7,500.

Twelve exceptionally talented young singer-actors have made it through two rounds of auditions for the 2012 Lotte Lenya Competition and will compete for top prizes of $15,000, $10,000 and $7,500 in the finals, to be held on April 21, 2012, at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Three-time Tony Award nominee Rebecca Luker, Broadway and Encores! music director Rob Berman, and Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization President and American Theater Wing Chairman of the Board Theodore S. Chapin will serve as judges.

The PBS concert version of A TALE OF TWO CITIES will get a DVD and cast recording to be released in the upcoming months.
