BWW Review: MEMPHIS at The Gateway
It's Memphis, Tennessee and disc jockey Huey Calhoun is showcasing a bright new singer and musical style on his radio show. The hip new sound of Felicia Farrell becomes a hit over the airwaves and the amateur is ultimately headed for stardom. Huey and Felicia's relationship goes from professional to personal and trouble ensues. Romance, racism, and rock and roll all serve as the backdrop for the Gateway Theater's magnificent production of 'Memphis.'
The Gateway Announces MEMPHIS
Broadway's smash hit musicalMemphis, winner of four Tony Awards® including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book and Best Orchestrations, will open at The Gateway on July 6th and run through July 21st with preview performances on July 5th.
BWW Review: LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS at The Gateway
The Gateway Playhouse closes out an amazing and busy Summer season with a superb production of the musical Little Shop Of Horrors. This incarnation runs at the Bellport venue through September 9th boasting an outstanding Broadway caliber cast. Based on the classic 1960 film, book writer Howard Ashman pens - and writes the lyrics for - the theatre staple's heartfelt story. And Alan Menken's music is a fun fusion of 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and Motown. You'll more than likely be familiar with the score's popular tunes including the title song and 'Suddenly, Seymour'.
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS Comes to Gateway Playhouse
Feed the need for musical comedy as The Gateway presents its production of Little Shop of Horrors, the hit musical from Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, creative geniuses behind Disney's The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. A clever satire, bursting with dynamic dance numbers and Motown and doo-wop songs, like 'Suddenly Seymour,' 'Skid Row' (Downtown), 'Dentist,' and of course, the title song, Little Shop of Horrors is one of the most popular shows in the world. Charming and hilarious, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, this show never fails to entertain! Previews on Wed, Aug 23 and Thurs, Aug 24 start at $39. All other tickets start at $59. BWW Review: Jonathan Larson's RENT Brings Excellent Ensemble to The Gateway
I'm always cautiously optimistic in seeing a regional production of Jonathan Larson's Rent as I am a Renthead of MANY years. The thing to remember, obviously, is art has different interpretations. It is interesting to see the different elucidations of the choreography, the varied choices the actors make, the Director's vision, et cetera. I can proudly say that The Gateway Playhouse's incarnation of the Tony and Pulitzer winner, which is kicking off a very busy Summer season for the darling Bellport venue, does not disappoint.
