It's A Busy December At Chen Dance Center!
CHEN DANCE CENTER is a vibrant and busy organization that continues to provide a major service to the dance world and its Chinatown community. The School hosts more than 400 students every week; the Center provides a home for the resident company H.T. Chen & Dancers; and the theater provides an intimate black box setting for performances by H.T. Chen & Dancers and for renting companies. In 2019 the organization will celebrate its 40th ANNIVERSARY.
Study Finds that Portrayals of Female STEM Characters in TV and Film Haven't Improved in 10 Years
The Lyda Hill Foundation, in partnership with Geena Davis's Institute on Gender in Media at Mount Saint Mary's University, released an extensive research report on the portrayals of female characters in science, technology, engineering and math in television and film. 'Portray Her: Representations of Women STEM Characters in Media' shows that entertainment media has a long way to go to improve stereotypes about pursuing STEM careers.

13th Annual Dance Media Film Festival Kicks Off This Weekend in Downtown L.A.
Celebrating the vibrant art of dance, Dance Camera West presents the 13th Annual Dance Media Film Festival, a public event incorporating dance explored through film, live performance, and architectural art. Several free live dance performances, an outdoor movie screening, a family-fun Dance-Along, Lester Horton Dance Awards ceremony, and over 20 shorts and long-form films and documentaries to be screened during the festival taking place in downtown Los Angeles today, June 6 and June 7, 8, and 13, 2014.
Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival Announces the Full 2014 Schedule, 6/14-8/24
Following the record-breaking attendance of Festival 2013, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival announces the full 2014 Festival free and ticketed event schedule. Jacob's Pillow is a National Historic Landmark, home to America's longest-running dance festival, and a recipient of the National Medal of Arts. Noted dance writer Jennifer Dunning has called the Pillow "the dance center of the nation, possibly the world."
Los Angeles' 13th Annual Dance Media Festival to Run 6/6-8 & 13
Celebrating the vibrant art of dance, Dance Camera West presents the 13th Annual Dance Media Film Festival, a public event incorporating dance explored through film, live performance, and architectural art. Several free live dance performances, an outdoor movie screening, a family-fun Dance-Along, Lestor Horton Dance Awards ceremony, and over 20 shorts and long-form films and documentaries to be screened during the festival taking place in downtown Los Angeles on June 6, 7, 8, and 13, 2014. Venues include The Music Center, Grand Park, REDCAT, The Museum of Contemporary Art, and Union Station. All outdoor events are free to the public. This year's theme of 'Restructure' includes a large-scale 'fast-formal' sculpture created specifically for the festival by artist Gustavo Godoy and co-commissioned by The Music Center, making its debut with a live dance performance with LA's own BODYTRAFFIC dance company. In addition, a special commission by Grand Park of an adaptation by L.A. Contemporary Dance Company of a celebrated work will be performed live in the park and the inaugural CalArts@ Dance Camera West Emerging Artists Competition where the winning college and high school films will receive $10,000 in cash and scholarship prizes. Selected films will be screened at the 13th Annual Dance Media Film Festival.
