BWW Review: Brian Stokes Mitchell's Café Carlyle Debut is a Treat for the Ear, Eye and Heart

What qualities define a leading man? Charisma, soul-searching masculinity, and a deep, lustrous voice--once upon a time, we had entertainers who possessed them all. With his Cafe Carlyle debut show that opened last night, Plays With Music--following his Tony-Award winning Broadway performances, 12 years on the road in concert, a couple of recent, all too brief New York theatrical turns, and television work--Brian Stokes Mitchell proves that few such leading men exist. Soon it may be like finding unicorns.
BWW Reviews: New Mom MEGAN HILTY is a 'Smash' Delivering Pop Songs and Standards at the Café Carlyle

I like Megan Hilty because she laughs a lot. She's fun! A young star of stage and screen-- having established herself as "Glinda" in Wicked on Broadway (2005-06) and subsequently becoming a TV star playing complicated and talented Ivy Lynn in the NBC hit musical drama Smash-Hilty opened her current run at the Cafe Carlyle Tuesday night to an excited, adoring audience. On stage with her band, directed by musical savant Matt Cusson--sporting a jaunty Newsies-style cap--at the keyboard (and including her husband Brian Gallagher on guitar, Ryan Hoagland on percussion, and Dennis Michael Keefe on upright bass), Hilty's effervescence was palpable, a heady mixture of genuine glee and sleep deprivation, as she effusively exclaimed her delight at being back at the Carlyle, following her last run when she was six-months pregnant. Now she has an eight-month old daughter. While her initial intention was to create a show about motherhood, the show ended up as a night of standards and Smash selections, giving the people what they know and love.
Photo Flash: Singer-Songwriter JD Souther Plays Cafe Carlyle

An architect of the Southern California sound and a huge influence on modern songwriting, JD Souther has written and co-written hits by the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt and the Dixie Chicks among many others. On the heels of his highly anticipated new album, Tenderness, JD Souther performed at Cafe Carlyle in a one night engagement, May 9. Scroll down for photos from the concert!
BWW Reviews: The Charismatic BUSTER POINDEXTER Galvanizes Café Carlyle With Raucous New Show

Buster Poindexter (aka David Johansen) doesn't so much play 'at' Cafe Carlyle as 'with' it. Like the bad kid from a black and white cult film, this charismatic artist establishes dominion over the highbrow room, determined to lower its bar as irrevocably as a limbo stick in a roadhouse lounge. A blistering, purposefully overwrought, genre-hopping, two-hour performance on Tuesday's opening night had even jaded waiters and busboys enthralled.
BWW Reviews: With His 'Eyes Wide Open,' Broadway's CHEYENNE JACKSON Gets His Feet Wet in Cabaret at the Café Carlyle

The extremely personable Cheyenne Jackson landed in Cafe Carlyle last night as if on the moon. A hardscrabble, Ohio childhood and late start in the business explain the artist's astonishment at finding himself in the prestigious nightclub. While Jackson's resume includes leading roles in Broadway musicals such as All Shook Up (2004), Xanadu (2007), Damn Yankees (2008), and Finian's Rainbow (2010), he took the Carlyle stage with only one cabaret appearance under his belt so the genre is as unfamiliar to the vocalist as the venue.
Photo Flash: Tony DeSare Performs Bemelmans Residency at The Carlyle

The Carlyle, a Rosewood Hotel, welcomes Tony DeSare, originator of the Sunday Night Bemelmans series, back to Bemelmans Bar for an extended Sunday night residency. Named a 'Rising Star' male vocalist in Downtown magazine's recent Critics' Poll, DeSare has lived up to the distinction by winning critical and popular acclaim for his performances throughout the US and across the globe. DeSare has three top ten Billboard Jazz albums under his belt and has been featured on the CBS Early Show, NPR and the Today Show. His music was recently posted by social media celebrity juggernaut, George Takei. Tony DeSare(piano/vocals) will be accompanied by Ed Decker (guitar) and Steve Doyle (bass) as a trio throughout the residency. They'll bring their fresh take on old school classics to Bemelmans Sunday nights, January 4-25; February 8 and 15; March 1 and 8. Scroll down for photos from DeSare's first few concerts!
BWW Reviews: Steve Tyrell's 10th Anniversary Holiday Season Show at Café Carlyle Is Appetizing, But Ultimately Unfulfilling

With another holiday season upon us, it's time to celebrate time honored traditions, and in keeping with what's become a New York tradition, Steve Tyrell is celebrating his 10th year as the holiday season entertainment at the swanky Café Caryle on the Upper East Side (through New Year's Eve). This Grammy award-winning record producer and singer is treating audiences to his latest cabaret show, That Lovin' Feelin', which features hit tunes that are the heartbeat of America.
