BIO

Michael Stewart was an American playwright and librettist born on August 1, 1924, in Manhattan, New York City. He began his career writing for television, including shows such as "The Red Buttons Show" and "The Steve Allen Show." However, it was his work on Broadway that would make him a household name.

Stewart's first Broadway credit came in 1955 with "By the Beautiful Sea," a musical comedy that he wrote the book for. He would go on to write the books for several other hit musicals, including "Carnival!" (1961), "Hello, Dolly!" (1964), and "42nd Street" (1980). "Hello, Dolly!" in particular was a huge success, running for 2,844 performances and winning 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical for Stewart.
In addition to his work on Broadway, Stewart also wrote the book for the Off-Broadway musical "The Shoestring Revue" (1955) and the film adaptation of "Hello, Dolly!" (1969), which starred Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthau. He also wrote the lyrics for the song "Put on a Happy Face" from the musical "Bye Bye Birdie" (1960).
Stewart was known for his ability to create memorable characters and witty dialogue. His work often focused on themes of love and romance, and he had a talent for writing catchy, upbeat songs that audiences couldn't help but sing along to. His contributions to the world of musical theatre were significant, and his influence can still be felt today.
Sadly, Michael Stewart passed away on September 20, 1987, at the age of 63. However, his legacy lives on through his work, which continues to be performed and enjoyed by audiences around the world. In 2017, a revival of "Hello, Dolly!" starring Bette Midler opened on Broadway to critical acclaim, reminding audiences of the enduring appeal of Stewart's work.
