BWW Reviews: Music Box Musicals' NEXT TO NORMAL Stands Next to Greatness

NEXT TO NORMAL chronicles one family's struggles with its demons and the specter of Bipolar disorder. It gives some comic relief and a rock music soundtrack to the untenable situation that people with a mental illness and their loved ones find themselves in. That alone is enough reason to see Music Box Musicals' production.

BWW Reviews: MJR Theatricals | Music Box Musicals' AVENUE Q is Hysterical Fun

In 2003, a certain green girl flew on Broadway for the first time. In the same year, a handful of plucky performers with some ostentatiously crass puppets opened a smaller show Off-Broadway. They transferred to Broadway months before the witches of Oz made their big splash and later surprised everyone when they grabbed the coveted Triple Crown at the 2004 Tony Awards. Taking home the Tony for Best Book, Best Score, and Best Musical, AVENUE Q was truly defying gravity. More than 10 years later, the show is still running in New York City at Off-Broadway's New World Stages and in Houston Michael J. Ross's MJR Theatricals | Music Box Musicals' production is giddily showcasing why the musical has such pronounced staying power.
BWW Reviews: Zack's Mac Shack's SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD Is Electrifying

This past weekend, I had the distinct pleasure of discovering the Greater Houston Area's best kept secret. Ever since The Masquerade Theatre announced they were permanently closing on April 27, 2012, I have been going through Masquerade withdrawals. Other theatre groups, namely Michael J. Ross' Music Box Musicals among others, have sprung up in their absence and offer musical productions of the quality and caliber to fill the void that was left. As good as these productions are, they just aren't the same. Of course, Sunday's closing performance of Jason Robert Brown's SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD at The Masquerade Theatre's Artistic Director Phillip Duggins' Zack's Mac Shack, a new restaurant and cabaret performance space, in Galveston, Texas wasn't the same either, but it was pretty close.
BWW Reviews: MJR Theatricals | Music Box Musicals' LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is Spirited and Fun

As the dog days of summer needlessly drag on in Houston, enveloping the city in oppressive heat, Michael J. Ross' MJR Theatricals | Music Box Musicals is presenting LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. Roger Corman's notorious 1960 low-budget horror-themed comedy The Little Shop of Horrors serves as the basis for this cult favorite and classic musical. The cherished musical premiered on May 6, 1982 at the Workshop of the Players' Art (WPA) Theatre. It went on to garner critical acclaim Off-Broadway when it opened on July 27, 1982 at the Orpheum Theatre. The Off-Broadway production enjoyed 2,209 performances across its 5 year run. Its popularity and notoriety lead to the 1986 film adaption of the musical as well. 31 years later, the musical is still a favorite among producers and audiences alike, and MJR Theatricals | Music Box Musicals' production easily proves why.

Michael J. Rossi's Presents Debut, THE GIANTS OF THE CITADEL

What was the world like when the giants ruled it? Author Michael J. Rossi reveals the answer as he takes his readers on a fantastic journey through time to witness the rise of Adam and Eve that changed the world forever in his new book, The Giants of the Citadel.
BWW Reviews: SPELLING BEE is Musical Theatre Candy at Its Absolute Best

After riveting audiences with an emotionally raw and intellectual inaugural production of Stephen Sondheim's ASSASSINS, MJR Theatricals/Music Box Musicals is serving up a wondrously side-splitting, laugh-a-minute presentation of the Tony-award winning musical THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE. The clever and hilarious musical is based on Rebecca Feldman's C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E improvisation performed by The Farm, with music and lyrics by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin. It treats the audience as if they are really at the fictional spelling bee, and the cast gleefully breaks the fourth wall to interact with members of the audience. The musical follows six quirky kids (played by adults) through the spelling bee, and introduces the audience to three adults that are just as peculiar as the kids.
BWW Reviews: ASSASSINS is Enjoyable, Mesmerizing, and Thought-Provoking

As many gear up for Halloween, Music Box Musicals' inaugural production is striking a different nerve-a political nerve. With a wonderful production of John Weidman and Stephen Sondheim's thought-provoking musical ASSASSINS, Music Box Musicals invites audiences to listen. Not only to the tales they present on stage, but in our lives outside of the theatre as well.
