Michael J. Barnes is a voice, speech, dialect, and text coach; director; and actor.
He has voice/speech/dialect/text coached regionally and off-Broadway at theatres which include the Utah Shakespearean Festival, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, Arena Stage, Wilma Theatre, Studio Theatre (DC), Rep Stage Company, Pearl Theatre, People’s Light and Theatre, Venture Theatre, Denver Center Theatre Company, and Colorado Shakespeare Festival. He has coached the films The Witch (Sundance Festival Award-Winner), Convicted (Aiden Quinn, Kelly Preston and Tim Daily, directed by Academy Award winner Bille August) and Broken Bridges (Kelly Preston, Toby Keith, Burt Reynolds, Tess Harper; directed by Steven Goldman), and coached Faye Dunaway as Maria Callas for the as the yet unreleased Master Class.
Shows directed: Ain’t Misbehavin’, Sister Act, Legally Blonde, Next to Normal, Love’s Labours Lost, Urinetown, Dragon Pack Snack Attack (world premiere), Peter Pan, Guys & Dolls, Bat Boy, Hairspray, Hollywood/Ukraine, The Full Monty, Pippin, Ragtime: The Musical, Uncommon Women and Others, Into the Woods, Little Shop of Horrors, Desdemona: A Play About a Handkerchief, How I Learned to Drive, and Eastern Standard, as well as several new plays for Philadelphia Young Playwrights’ Festival.
He is an Associate Professor at Wayne State University and is the former Artistic Director for the Maggie Allesee Department of theatre and Dance and the Head of the BFA program in Acting. He holds an MFA from The National Theatre Conservatory, a BFA from the University of Oklahoma, post-graduate studies at Cambridge University, and is a Certified Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice VoiceWork. He is also the President of the Voice & Speech Trainers Association. Before coming to WSU, he was on the faculties of the University of Miami and Temple University.
