Hixenbaugh Ancient Art Presents the Face of Antiquity

Hixenbaugh Ancient Art is pleased to announce its inaugural show 'the face of antiquity.' The exhibition explores the widely varied depictions of the human face in ancient art. The show includes images produced by artists from various ancient European, North African, Western Asian, South American and Central American cultures in a variety of artistic media. The iconography of the human face in antiquity ran the gamut from idealized depictions of the divine to unflattering realistic portraits of mortals. Some of the portraits on view are of known individuals, such as the comic playwright Menander, while the identities of others are now lost to time. Playful images that adorned containers or children's playthings are on display alongside images of more serious connotations. The images range from secular to religious, from beautiful to frightful, realistic to idealized, but all convey a notion of the importance of the human face in art from its earliest beginnings. Over 90 ancient objects are on display including a remarkable Roman marble portrait of a Severan period woman, an exquisite Egyptian red glass head, a beautiful Greek Attic female head oinochoe, a substantial Egyptian wooden anthropomorphic sarcophagus lid, a graceful Cycladic Greek marble head, a haunting pair of Nazca trophy head vessels and a dazzling Inca gold mask. Large works such as mosaics and statuary are on view alongside miniature treasures including gems, jewelry and coins. Hixenbaugh Ancient Art's inaugural exhibition 'the face of antiquity' will run through March 28, 2015 and can be viewed at its New York gallery Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 6pm. An additional collection of fine quality authentic antiquities can be viewed on their web site (www.hixenbaugh.net). About Hixenbaugh Ancient Art Hixenbaugh Ancient Art Ltd, located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, is dedicated to handling fine authentic antiquities (Greek, Egyptian, Judean, Near Eastern, Ancient European, Ancient Mediterranean, Pre-Columbian and Roman Art). Today's collectors are custodians of the past, links in a chain, preserving the past for future generations by passing their collections on to their heirs, reselling them to eager collectors, or donating them to museums. In doing so, the collector of ancient art reaps the many benefits of acquiring truly unique and thought provoking objects that have come down to us from the ancients, whose influences pervade every aspect of the modern world.
