Melissa McCarthy, born August 26, 1970, is an award-winning American actress and comedian. She is best known for her breakout role as Sookie St. James in Gilmore Girls (2000-2007), and her Emmy-winning performance as Molly Flynn in Mike & Molly (2010-2016). McCarthy also gained widespread acclaim for her film work, earning an Academy Award nomination for Bridesmaids (2011) and another for Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018).
McCarthy has starred in numerous hit comedies, including Identity Thief (2013), The Heat (2013), and Spy (2015), while also exploring more dramatic roles in recent years. She played Ursula in Disney's The Little Mermaid (2023) and starred in the Hulu series Nine Perfect Strangers (2021). She and her husband Ben Falcone run On the Day Productions, through which they’ve produced several films together.
Born in Plainfield, Illinois, McCarthy began her career in stand-up and improvisational comedy with The Groundlings.
