Irish Arts Center Breaks Ground On Landmark New Facility
Actor and IAC Honorary Chair Gabriel Byrne; Corey Johnson, Speaker of the New York City Council; Congressman Joseph Crowley; Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer; New York City Cultural Affairs Commissioner Tom Finkelpearl; Ciaran Madden, Consul General of Ireland; and other City and State dignitaries joined the Irish Arts Center board, staff, and supporters as they broke ground today on the New Irish Arts Center, a heralded multidisciplinary center that will bring people of all backgrounds together through the excellence and dynamism of Irish arts and culture. The ceremony marked the start of construction on Phase One of the new facility, a state-of-the-art new building at 726 11th Avenue, now fully funded and scheduled to open in late 2020.

Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College continues its 2017-18 Kumble Theater season with Daniel Beaty's solo theatrical tour-de-force, Emergency, on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 8pm and Sunday, February 18, 2018 at 3pm. Originally titled Emergence-SEE when it made its New York premiere at the Public Theater in 2006 under the direction of Kenny Leon, the show has since toured nationally and internationally, earning Beaty a 2007 Obie Award for Writing & Performing and a 2007 AUDELCO Award for Solo Performance.

City Announces Over $40 Million For Local Arts And Cultural Organizations
Mayor de Blasio, Speaker Mark-Viverito, Cultural Affairs Commissioner Tom Finkelpearl, and City Council Majority Leader and Cultural Affairs Committee Chair Jimmy Van Bramer today announced more than $40 million in grants to support public programming at nearly 950 cultural organizations across all five boroughs, including support for priorities in the City's CreateNYC cultural plan. This represents the largest ever allotment for the Department of Cultural Affairs' Cultural Development Fund (CDF), which distributes funding for cultural programming to hundreds of nonprofit cultural groups every year.
Mayor Bill de Blasio Repeals Cabaret Law to Allow Dancing at NYC Bars & Restaurants
Mayor Bill de Blasio today signed a historic piece of legislation into law which will repeal the 91 year-old Cabaret Law. The Mayor previously held a public hearing for the bill on November 20th. Int. 1652-A, which passed the full council at the end of October, repeals all aspects of this law except for two safety requirements. Establishments previously required to obtain a cabaret license must continue to abide by these requirements. Establishments must install and maintain security cameras; and if they employ security guards, the law ensures such security guards are licensed pursuant to state law and to maintain a roster of such security guards.
