BWW CD Reviews: Ghostlight Records' THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE (Original Cast Recording) is Accessible and Artful

The sounds of the seventies are alive and well in musical theatre. Taking lessons he has learned from previous outings, Michael Freidman's compositions for THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE fly based on his keen ear for integrating disparate musical modalities into the fabric of musical theatre. These elements gel perfectly for Ghostlight Records' mesmerizing release of THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE (Original Cast Recording).
My Top 10 (Well, 15) Albums of 2014

It's that time of year, and everyone is making their lists. For me, this task is always harder than it probably should be. I wrestle with myself and debate the merits of everything. I worry about who might get their feelings hurt, and whom I may accidentally overlook. So, for 2014, I promised myself to make a simple list of the 10 albums from 2014 that I simply couldn't get enough of. Naturally, that list is actually 15 items long. (Surprise!)

Recently Ghostlight Records released the astounding original cast recording of VENICE. BWW Reviews: Two Small Theater Companies Impress - nimbus theatre's Delightfully Bizarre GHOST SONATA and Candid Theatre Company's Compelling True-Crime HAUPTMANN

Readers of Broadway World Minneapolis are familiar with the big splashy Broadway tours that come through Minneapolis' Orpheum Theatre and St. Paul's Ordway Center for the Arts, as well as what's happening at our own big theaters like the Guthrie. But my goal as a Broadway World contributor is to make you aware of the great work that some of the smaller companies around town are doing. Two great examples right now are nimbus theatre, which does consistently good work as well as hosts other small companies at their Northeast Minneapolis home, and Candid Theatre Company, which recently won an Ivey for their new play DOGWOOD. nimbus' production of August Strindberg's GHOST SONATA combines original music, ingenious set design, and video projections to enhance the deeply layered 100 year old play. Candid's production of the historical true-crime drama HAUPTMANN presents a compelling story with the barest of sets and costumes. Both are worth your time and deserve a bigger audience than the ones I was a part of. Keep reading for more details on both shows. Moral of the story: don't be afraid to venture off the beaten path and give a new theater a try. You might discover something pretty great.
Photo Coverage: CTG's Kirk Douglas Theatre Celebrates its 10th Birthday in Culver City on 10/14/14

The Kirk Douglas Theatre was originally an historic 1940s Streamlined Moderne-style movie house called the Culver Theater, and it is believed that Kirk Douglas' movie "Spartacus" played there in the early 1960s. In 2003 it was transformed into an intimate 317-seat live theatre venue and named for the theatre's initial major donor: Kirk Douglas. On Tuesday, October 14, 2014, CTG's Kirk Douglas Theatre celebrated its 10th birthday with Anne and Kirk Douglas in attendance.
