Matt Henry is a British actor, singer, and dancer who has made a name for himself in both the West End and on Broadway. Born in 1983 in West London, Henry began his career as a dancer, performing with the likes of Kylie Minogue and the Sugababes before transitioning to musical theater.
Henry's first major role came in the West End production of "Lion King" in 2008, where he played the role of Simba. He received critical acclaim for his performance, with The Guardian praising his "raw energy and emotional depth." Henry continued to perform in "Lion King" for several years, also taking on the role of Rafiki and covering for other male leads.
In 2015, Henry joined the cast of "Kinky Boots" in the West End, taking on the role of Lola, a drag queen who helps a struggling shoe factory turn their business around. Henry's performance was widely praised, with The Independent calling him "a revelation" and The Telegraph hailing his "powerful voice and commanding stage presence." Henry went on to win the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance.
Henry made his Broadway debut in "Kinky Boots" in 2018, reprising his role as Lola. His performance earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. In addition to his stage work, Henry has also appeared on television, including a guest role on the BBC series "Doctor Who" in 2015.
In 2019, Henry returned to the West End to star in "Only Fools and Horses: The Musical," based on the popular British sitcom. He played the role of musical director Raquel Turner, a character originally played by Tessa Peake-Jones in the TV series. The show received mixed reviews, but Henry's performance was praised by The Stage as "charismatic and vocally impressive."
Most recently, Henry appeared in the 2020 West End production of "Mary Poppins," playing the role of Bert, the chimney sweep originally played by Dick Van Dyke in the 1964 film. The production was well-received, with The Guardian praising Henry's "endearing charm" and "knockout performance" in the role.
