BWW Reviews: PICASSO AT THE LAPIN AGILE at SSR Has Moments but Lacks Cohesion
When any of Steve Martin's plays such as "Picasso at the Lapin Agile", currently playing at Second Story Rep, is done well it can be a riotous evening of surreal fun. But when it misses the mark it's still funny but lacks that certain spark of genius that Martin is known for. And while SSR's production doesn't completely miss the mark it's more sparkly moments are overshadowed by its somewhat scattered and tepid ones.
BWW Reviews: STC's HOLIDAY OF ERRORS Makes for a Nicely Naughty Holiday Diversion
Take equal parts Dickens and Shakespeare, add in a healthy spoonful of historical tom-foolery, the zest from a bawdy queen and stir it up til you don't know one play from another and you'll have the latest outing from one of the more impressive small theater companies in town, Sound Theatre Company, with their World Premiere of "Holiday of Errors". And while it may get slightly muddled at times and take just a bit to get started, if you sit back and let the ridiculousness of it wash over you, you're bound to have a good time.

BWW Reviews: Clever Confusion in DOGG'S HAMLET AND CAHOOT'S MACBETH from Sound Theatre Company
I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again, you practically have to take a masters class in whatever Tom Stoppard is writing about in order to fully get his plays. Whether is be Shakespeare, Czech History or Mathematics it helps to have some kind of advance knowledge before you sit down. Having said that, while "Dogg's Hamlet and Cahoot's Macbeth" definitely had me saying "Huh?" a few times, what it amounts to is a clever, funny and engaging look at language and power.
DOGG'S HAMLET, CAHOOT'S MACBETH Launches Sound Theatre's 7th Season Tonight
Sound Theatre Company launches its seventh season with a seldom-performed pair of works by Tom Stoppard, Dogg's Hamlet, Cahoot's Macbeth. Stoppard's smart, witty and gleeful word-play combines a thought experiment from Ludwig Wittgenstein with repression of art in the Soviet Eastern bloc to illuminate the power that language has in our world.
BWW Reviews: WISEMEN Returns to ACT with Irreverent Holiday Fun
We've all been suspicious of how Mary really became pregnant with Jesus. I mean, Immaculate Conception? Come on! Well last year's sold out hit "Wisemen" is back to investigate just that. And while structurally it felt like it droned a bit, the sacrilegious hilarity is the perfect departure to the usual holiday theatrical fare.
BWW Reviews: Sound Theatre Company's THE ILLUSION Brings Truth to Magic
I don't think many would disagree when I say Tony Kushner is one of theater's most incredible playwrights with his amazing gift for language. And his adaptation of Pierre Corneille's 17th century tale "The Illusion" is no different with its poetic dialogue and gloriously surreal arc from melodramatic to stark truth. And Sound Theatre Company's production of this magical piece, for the most part, understands and delivers the beauty of that arc.
Sound Theatre to Present THE ILLUSION, 8/11-26
Sound Theatre Company brings award-winning playwright Tony Kushner's adaptation of THE ILLUSION to the Center Theatre this August. In Pierre Corneille's 17th century tale, a father seeks the dark arts of a magician in a cave to learn about the travails of his estranged son, when he is thrust into a fantastical journey that challenges his assumptions about love, life, and reality.
