This fall season, jazz is in the air with Flushing Town Hall’s virtual music programming including the popular monthly Virtual Jazz Jam: Celebrating the Legacy of Louis Armstrong, and two concert series: Lioness: Women in Jazz, and New Music Horizons – Collaborative Artists in Concert—all of which are free for anyone to enjoy from the comfort of their home.
The Lucille Lortel Theatre Foundation Has Announced the NYC Public High School Student Playwriting Fellowship
The Lucille Lortel Theatre Foundation has announced the NYC Public High School Student Playwriting Fellowship, created as an opportunity for young writers citywide to get unparalleled access to New York City professional artists for mentoring. The inaugural Lortel student Fellows and finalists - representing every Borough, as well as D75 and D79 school districts - submitted original 10-minute one-act plays and were selected by a panel of playwrights, directors, and literary managers including Kareem Fahmy, Seri Lawrence, Cori Thomas, Mark Wade, and Cary Wong. Fellows will meet with a playwright mentor to discuss their play and learn more about playwriting as a career. Playwright mentors for this group of teen playwrights are Joshua Harmon, Kait Kerrigan, Sylvia Khoury, and Rehana Lew Mirza. All plays will be presented in a special one-night-only performance at the Lucille Lortel Theatre (121 Christopher Street) on March 24, 2020. Kimille Howard will direct.
Jazz Night Comes to Hoff-Barthelson Music School
Members of Hoff-Barthelson Music School's Jazz Faculty take the stage to kick-off the 2019-2020 Faculty Concert Series on Friday, October 18, 2019, at 7:30 pm with Jazz Night! An evening of improvisations and jazz standards, listeners will be treated to performances by Ed Palermo, saxophone; Rolf Sturm, jazz guitar; Jamie Reynolds, piano; and Glenn Rhian, percussion. Come hear members of HB's amazing jazz faculty in performance! Mix and mingle with them at the post-concert reception, and learn about opportunities to join HB Jazz Ensembles for kids, youth and adults at all levels, study privately, learn jazz theory and more!
As The Weather Cools Down, Flushing Town Hall Heats Up This Fall
Fall gets festive at Flushing Town Hall! The global arts venue will present over 30 programs to entertain audiences of all ages and backgrounds this September through December. From a Diwali dance party to a marionette Nutcracker, there will be something for everyone to celebrate this season, including Flushing Town Hall's first-ever presentation of six NEA Jazz Masters together on stage for a once-in-a-lifetime concert.
Seven Participants Announced For LA Phil's National Composers Intensive 2019
In its Centennial year, the Los Angeles Philharmonic continues to grow in its commitment to supporting the creation of new music and nurturing young composers through two programs: National Composers Intensive (NCI), for composers ages 18 to 30, and the Nancy and Barry Sanders Composer Fellowship Program (CFP) for high school-aged composers. For the first time, the NCI program collaborates with New York City-based International Contemporary Ensemble (the Ensemble) to work with seven composers who will have the opportunity to workshop their pieces, both in New York and in Los Angeles, culminating in a performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

On their 2015 debut, 'Event Horizon,' bassist/composer Mark Wade and his trio displayed an uncanny empathy and earned a warm reception from press, radio, and fans. 'Moving Day,' his sophomore recording which will be released February 2 by his label Mark Wade Music, showcases the evolution of the trio's tight, seemingly telepathic interplay.
Brian Woodruff's OKB Trio & More Set for Flushing Town Hall Music Mix Series this Fall
Our 2nd floor theater will be closed from mid- October through Spring 2014 for renovations, so our gallery will become the go-to place for great music, including a new series- the Music Mix Series. These concerts will offer both traditional and new jazz in an intimate setting. All artist are selected by the Queens Jazz Overground and our Jazz Producer Clyde Bullard.
