Mario Gotoh has distinguished herself in dual roles as a violinist and a violist with an active and remarkably versatile performance style. She performs a wide spectrum of musical styles, including early music on period instruments, contemporary classical music in close collaboration with composers, popular music, tango and folk genres. She holds two Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from Stony Brook University- in Violin and Viola performance, as well as a Master of Music degree from Stony Brook and a B.M. and Performance Certificate from the Eastman School of Music.
Mario currently performs violin and viola in Lin-Manuel Miranda's hip-hop show, "Hamilton," which played at the Public Theater through May 2015 and opens on Broadway in July 2015 at the Richard Rodgers Theater.
Mario has performed numerous times as a violin and viola soloist with orchestras featuring works by Bach, Barber, Dvorak, Glazunov, Mendelssohn, Arvo Pärt, Sarasate, Sibelius, Vivaldi, and Walton. She has performed chamber music with many prominent classical musicians, including the Emerson String Quartet, Nobuko Imai, Frans Helmerson, Anton Kuerti, Philippe Graffin, and early music with Paul O'Dette, and Kristian Bezuidenhout. Mario has been invited to perform across North America, UK, Europe and Asia and her performances have been broadcast worldwide including NPR, CBC, PBS Television, TF1 French Television, NHK Japan and include major arts festivals around the world such as Ravinia, Tanglewood, Caramoor, Aspen Music Festival, Music@Menlo, the Festival Consonances (France), International Masterclasses Apeldoorn (Netherlands), Banff Centre (Canada), Boston Early Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, Institute and Festival for Contemporary Performance, International Computer Music Festival, and National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts' National ARTS Week. In addition to her classical performances in the world’s most renown concert halls, she performed in Radio City Music Hall's Christmas Spectacular, and was the Concertmaster for the Radio CIty Music Hall spring 2013 show, Heart & Lights. In addition to performing on Broadway, she has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman and performs regularly with popular artists and bands, including the disco band Escort, Michael Bublé, Brian Wilson, Joshua Redman, Damien Rice, Goldfrapp, My Brightest Diamond, DM Stith, The Clogs at venues such as Radio City Music Hall, Webster Hall’s Grand Ballroom, Madison Square Garden, Beacon Theatre, NYC Town Hall, Bowery Ballroom, United Palace Theatre, and Barbès on electric/amplified instruments. She has recorded and performed tango music with renowned musicians Daniel Binelli, Polly Ferman and Marcelo Nisinman. Additionally, Mario has served as concertmaster, principal violin, and principal viola in numerous orchestras and performs regularly with several ensembles, including The Knights, Orchestra of St. Luke's, and Paragon Ragtime Orchestra.
Mario is already a passionate teacher and has served in this capacity at a number of New York area institutions. She currently has a studio of private music students and was previously the Viola Professor at SUNY Suffolk, violin and chamber music teacher at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Camp MSM, and violin instructor at the Bloomingdale School of Music. She taught a studio of undergraduate violinists at Stony Brook University 2009-2012, where she also taught in the music theory and history in the classroom, undergraduate chamber ensembles, and chamber music at the Stony Brook Pre-College and Adult Music Programs. Upon graduation from Stony Brook University, she was awarded the prestigious SUNY-wide Arts Honor for "demonstrated excellence, originality and promise in the arts" and was also nominated for SUNY Stonybrook University's "40 Under 40" alumni.
Mario was born in Japan and is based in New York City. She is inspired by her interests in the visual arts, literature, non-classical music, cooking, swimming, and exploring cuisines, cultures and new places.
