MARCUS SCOTT is a journalist, reporter, playwright, musical theater writer, songwriter, dramaturge, sketch comic and blogger. His work has appeared in Elle, Essence, Uptown, Trace, Giant, Hello Beautiful, NewsOne, The Urban Daily, Madame Noire, Styleblazer, Clutch, Out, The Underwear Expert, Bleu, Krave and Artvoice, among others. His has also penned multiple interviews, columns and articles for Broadway Black, Playbill, Edge Media Group, New York Theatre Guide, Backstage, Passport’s “The Broadway Blog” and serves as a writing fellow for Ryan Scott Oliver’s Crazy Town Blog. His 20-minute musical “Vitruvian Man” was performed in a private ceremony in the Black Box Theater for the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU’s Tisch and starred Jason Tam (A Chorus Line, Lysistrata Jones), Stephen Mitchell Brown (Jekyll & Hyde) and Adam Monley (Mamma Mia!). His thesis musical, Cherry Bomb also received a reading at NYU’s Tisch. Selections from that musical were from performed as part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival’s “Inheritance” concert (sponsored by Student Leadership Program) at the Pershing Square Signature Theatre, and the Goodspeed Opera House. With Cherry Bomb, Scott became the recipient of the Drama League’s 2017 First Stage Artist In Residence. “Malaise,” his 10-minute play was performed as part of the 2015 Fresh Fruit Festival at the Nuyorican Poets Café and at the Wild Project, where the event received the award for Time Out magazine’s “Critic's Pick.” It was also performed at the Midtown International Theater Festival and the Emerging Artist Theatre New Works Series at TADA! Theatre. Scott was later presented with the Pomegranate Seeds Award at the 2015 Fruitie Awards, in acknowledgement of "Outstanding Ensemble Effort" alongside five other winners for Best Short Plays. Scott also wrote an American family drama Tumbleweed; a finalist for the $45,000 I Am Soul Playwrights Residency, and received a workshop at the 2015-2016 Keep Soul Alive reading series under the National Black Theatre in Harlem. It also received a reading with The Bechdel Group. With Tumbleweed, Scott was among the top 25 finalists for The Civilians' R&D Group in 2016. The play was also a semi-finalist for the 2015-2016 Random Access Workshop Readings, the 2016 Premiere Stages Play Festival and the 2016 Fresh Ground Pepper PlayGround PlayGroup. At the moment, Scott is working on Born Again, a rock musical, and Sibling Rivalries, a play. Scott is a graduate of Buffalo State University, with a Bachelors of Arts in Communications (Print Journalism) and a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts (Acting), and is alum of the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
