Review: NOISES OFF at The Topher at Zach Theatre is BRILLIANT!
Noises Off is a masterclass in timing and physical comedy. The precision with which the actors execute their slapstick routines and intricate movements is truly remarkable. The well-timed door slams, missed cues, and perfectly choreographed chaos complement a perfectly written script that has audiences roaring with laughter.
BWW Review: THE DUCHESS OF MALFI - Hidden Room Recreates Renaissance Thriller
The Hidden Room has a reputation for presenting meticulously researched historic theatre in the acting style in which they were originally produced. Their current show, THE DUCHESS OF MALFI does not disappoint. The cast and crew outdo themselves in presenting outstanding classic theatre every time. After it's run in Austin, this production hits the road to perform in London, Stratford and Cornwall.
The Hidden Room Presents THE DUCHESS OF MALFI
Before the Gothic Horror of Stoker and Shelley, before the most curious corners of the minds of the Brothers Grimm, there was John Webster's dark fairytale of power, corruption, fate, and forbidden love - the Duchess of Malfi.
BWW Review: Razor Sharp Black Comedy THE SECRETARY Turns the Gun Debate On Its Head
THE SECRETARY is a world premiere comedy by Kyle John Schmidt that shines a dark and wry light on America's love affair with guns. Initially developed at the Ingram New Play Lab at Nashville Repertory Theatre and workshopped earlier this season at Hyde Park Theatre, this razor sharp black comedy gets a slick, polished and professional production from Theatre en Bloc, now playing at The Long Center. When the sweet elderly secretary at a local high school deals with a threat in her office by firing off six bullets, the local gun manufacturer gets the idea to name their brand new gun 'The Secretary', after her. Sales are slumping and they take advantage of the unfortunate modern reality that news of each new shooting is good for business. As production begins on their newest firearm, their guns begin going off without anyone pulling the trigger. Featuring an all female cast, THE SECRETARY is a black comedy with an extremely timely message.
BWW Reviews: Austen Comes to Austin in Pristine PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
I must confess that I came to Austin Shakespeare's current production of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE with no prejudices of my own. I've never read the original Jane Austen novel, and I've never seen any of the film versions with the exception of Bridget Jones's Diary, which is very loosely based on the Austen classic. However, prior knowledge of Austen and her work is not needed whatsoever to enjoy this pristine production. Whether you are an Austen fan or are a newcomer like myself, there is much to love about this spectacular show.
