BIO

Lisa Kron is a writer and performer best known for her work in the theater world. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1961, Kron grew up in Lansing and attended Kalamazoo College before moving to New York City in the early 1980s.

Kron began her career as a performance artist, creating and performing her own solo pieces in downtown Manhattan venues. Her work drew on her experiences as a lesbian and as a member of the Jewish community, and often explored themes of identity and family.
In the early 1990s, Kron began to transition to playwriting, and her work quickly gained recognition in the theater world. Her first play, "101 Humiliating Stories," premiered in 1993 at the Public Theater in New York City. The play, which was based on Kron's own experiences, was a critical success and marked Kron as a rising star in the theater world.
Kron's next play, "2.5 Minute Ride," premiered in 1996 at the La Jolla Playhouse in California before moving to New York City's Public Theater. The play, which chronicled Kron's travels with her father to Auschwitz and to a Cleveland amusement park, earned Kron an Obie Award and a Drama Desk Award.
In 2004, Kron collaborated with composer Jeanine Tesori on the musical "Fun Home," which was based on Alison Bechdel's graphic memoir of the same name. Kron wrote the book and lyrics for the show, which premiered at the Public Theater before moving to Broadway in 2015. "Fun Home" was a critical and commercial success, earning five Tony Awards including Best Musical.
Kron continued to work in the theater world throughout the 2010s, writing and performing in a number of plays and musicals. In 2014, she premiered "In the Wake" at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California. The play, which explored the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, earned Kron a Guggenheim Fellowship and an OBIE Award.
Kron's most recent work is the play "The Good Book," which she co-wrote with playwright and director Heidi Schreck. The play premiered at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2018 before moving to the Court Theatre in Chicago. "The Good Book" explores the history and meaning of the Bible, and features a large and diverse cast of characters.
In addition to her work in the theater world, Kron has also worked extensively in television and film. She has written for and appeared on a number of television shows, including "The L Word," "Six Feet Under," and "The Big C." She has also appeared in a number of films, including "The Savages" and "This Is Where I Leave You."
Kron's work has been recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In addition to the awards mentioned above, she has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a MacArthur "Genius" Grant, and a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical for "Fun Home."
Overall, Lisa Kron's work in the theater world has been marked by her willingness to explore difficult and complex themes, and to do so with humor, insight, and compassion. She has become one of the most respected and admired voices in contemporary theater, and her work continues to inspire and challenge audiences around the world.
