Leonardo Suarez-Paz is a 4th generation artist who carries a unique 100-year family legacy in tango and a vast experience across classical, jazz and world genres. Leonardo is known for his unique talents as a violinist, vocalist, composer, tango dancer & choreographer. Mr. Suarez-Paz grew up surrounded by the main protagonists of tango, his renowned parents Fernando and Beatriz Suarez-Paz, Osvaldo Berlingieri, Horacio Ferrer and Astor Piazzolla, the revolutionary composer who mentored Leonardo Suarez-Paz.
Leonardo made his debut singing at age 6 and as a violinist at age 14, gaining experience in both classical and tango music. At 16, he became the youngest member of the Orquesta Estable del Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, South America’s most significant opera house. Leonardo performed and recorded as a soloist with tango's most legendary figures including Mariano Mores, Horacio Salgán, Néstor Marconi, Atilio Stampone, Osvaldo Berlingieri, Horacio Ferrer, Federico Scorticatti, Tanya, Osvaldo Requena and many others. Leonardo was featured as a dancer and violin soloist in the iconic shows of Tangox2, Perfumes de Tango and The Mariano Mores Show. Leonardo was the only violin soloist to be featured in both Broadway tango productions of Tango Argentino and Forever Tango.
As a classical musician, Mr. Suarez-Paz’ has accompanied Alfredo Kraus, Placido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli, and Aaron Rosen; played as a soloist in Julio Bocca's Ballet Argentino and was the Concertmaster for Savion Glover's 'Classical Savion' in 2006-2016, for Tanguera in New York’s City Center in 2009 and a soloist for New York City Opera's production of ‘Maria de Buenos Aires.’ Leonardo has performed at Carnegie Hall, at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy with Tango Passion & Swing, and at the Spoleto Festival in Italy with Savion Glover. In addition to Tango Argentino and Forever Tango, his Broadway credits as a violinist include Bring In Da Noise Bring In Da Funk, Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, and Wicked.
Mr. Suarez-Paz’ jazz credits include playing and recording with Stanley Jordan, Cody Moffett, and Jim Hall; as well as arranging for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Mr. Suarez-Paz was a soloist on the Grammy award-winning album ‘100 Años de Mariachi’ with Placido Domingo, the 3xLatin Grammy award-winning album ‘Amarte Es Un Placer’ with Luis Miguel and the Latin Grammy-winning and Grammy-winning album “Tangos” with Ruben Blades and Carlos Franzetti. He recorded on film soundtracks including Circo De Arrabal, Bossa Nova, The Imposters, and Flawless with Robert De Niro.
Leonardo Suarez Paz is the artistic director of PIAZZOLLA100 project and Nuevo Tango Arts, dedicated to preserving the legacy and advancing the evolution of tango and its relationship with jazz, classical, and world genres, while uniting people globally through art and culture.
His numerous projects include the 2xLatin Grammy nominated Cuartetango string quartet, Cuartetango Music & Dance Company, Leonardo Suarez Paz's PIAZZOLLA100 - El Nuevo Tango and many others. Leonardo's work has been featured at the Teatro Colon Opera House, Teatro Alvear, Centro Cultural Kirchner and the Buenos Aires Tango Festival in Buenos Aires, at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts and Chautauqua Institution New York, at the Cleveland Museum of Art, National Museum of Dance and live at the Latin GRAMMY Awards, following a double Latin GRAMMY Award nomination in 2012 for his album Masters of Bandoneon (Azica/Naxos) on which he is featured as composer, arranger and violinist. As an educator, Leonardo Suarez Paz is an Official Ambassador of the the Academia Nacional del Tango in Buenos Aires and the Dean's Artist-In-Residence at NYU Steinhardt.
