Lee Nowell is a professional playwright and director who focuses on new work.
Her plays have been presented at Actor's Express (ALBATROSS; PAPER HOUSE; OBSESSION), Georgia Public Broadcasting (BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT: THE TROY DAVIS PROJECT), Theatre in the Square (URBAN FAIRYTALE), Horizon Theatre (BLUE ANGELS WEEKEND), 7Stages (PREACHER FROM THE BLACK LAGOON; THE COMMISSION), Ex Somnium (HOW TO SURVIVE BEING HUMAN), Synchronicity Theatre (BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT: THE TROY DAVIS PROJECT), Play West (BLUE ANGELS WEEKEND; THE COMMISSION), and Found Stages (AND CAULDRON BUBBLE). She has adjudicated plays for the National Endowment for the Arts and the Ohio Arts Council and has served as a judge for the Governor's Honors Program. Ms. Nowell is also in the vanguard of the Salon Theatre movement in Atlanta. The productions she has directed have garnered critical acclaim, including being named one of the Top Ten Productions of the Year by the ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION. Ms. Nowell has directed for the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, 7Stages, Synchronicity Theatre, Georgia Ensemble Theatre, Horizon Theatre, Essential Theatre, and barking dog theatre. She is an Artistic Associate at Synchronicity Theatre. She is the recipient of two Inverness Playwriting Awards, three Turner New Voices in the Works Grants, two NEA Grants, and has been nominated for The List, a Jennie Award, two Suzi Bass Awards, Best Play of the Year by Atlanta Theatre Fans, and an NEA Distinguished New Play Development Award.

Synchronicity Theatre's production of Mirandy and Brother Wind will now run from March 12 to April 4, 2021. The production will fill the spot once belonging to Lee Nowell's Blue Angels Weekend which will now be presented in an online workshop format with demonstrated scenes and interaction with the cast, director and playwright, in February 2021.

Synchronicity Theatre's Lee Nowell To Step Down As Managing Director
On June 30, 2018, Lee Nowell will step down as Managing Director of Synchronicity Theatre. Ms. Nowell, an acclaimed and award-winning playwright, is leaving the position in order to fully-commit and focus on a variety of creative projects. Beginning July 1, 2018, Virginia (Gin) Nugent will serve as Interim Managing Director, and will temporarily assume Ms. Nowell's roles and responsibilities. She will not be a candidate for the permanent position. An official search for a full-time Managing Director will begin in mid-July 2018.

Atlanta's Synchronicity Theatre will produce the rolling premiere of Jennifer Barclay's new play, Ripe Frenzy. The winner of the 2016 NNPN Smith Prize for Political Theatre, Ripe Frenzy tells the story of a mass shooting in a small American town. Told from multiple points of view, and through the lens of Thornton Wilder's classic play, Our Town, Barclay examines all sides of a tragedy that has ruptured the spirit a once idyllic community. Performances run from April 13 to May 6, 2018.

The plays that will be workshopped this year are Medica by Daryl Lisa Fazio, Romeo & Naomi Ramirez by Kathryn Walat, and Hands of Color by Kimberly Monks. On January 30, 2017, Atlanta's Synchronicity Theatre launched a test-run of Stripped Bare, a new arts incubator project that gives artists a space to create and produce new work. Designed for early-career artists, Stripped Bare focuses on projects that emphasize words and ideas, with minimal technical elements. For this first year, the program was available by invitation only. Invitations were sent to Atlanta-based artists who had at least one paid professional credit, but had not originated or created more than five professional projects. They were asked to submit proposals. Two winning projects were selected:
