This fall, Cygnet Theatre will present the San Diego artistic debut of Washington D.C. Director Jennifer L. Nelson. Nelson, who will direct the upcoming Season XIV productions of August Wilson's Seven Guitars and King Hedley II was in San Diego recently to audition and cast the actors - each playing two roles.

Saving the most hilarious and provocative for last, Cygnet is closing their 11th season by bringing The Motherf**ker with the Hat by Stephen Adly Guirgis (The Little Flower of East Orange) to San Diego for its premiere. The high-octane, verbal cage match about love, fidelity and misplaced haberdashery, is set smack in the center of New York's Hell's Kitchen. A Broadway hit that is exhilarating, hilarious and totally irreverent, this comedy/drama is also an examination of acceptance, loyalty and above all love. As is apparent from its title, this stunningly written play contains drugs, violence, sexual situations and strong f**king language. The production runs May 15th through June 22nd at the Old Town Theatre. Opening Night is tonight, May 24th.

Gee's Bend depicts the turbulent history of African-Americans in the 20th century by focusing on a single family in the real community of Gee's Bend, AL, which is now famous for the beautiful quilts created by the women that grew up there. A moving tale of three generations of African-American women living in this isolated Alabama town chronicles the courage and resiliency of their life's journey. Gee's Bend highlights the life of Sadie Pettway, from her teenage years to her 70s, and the other women in her quilting circle. Their experiences inspired them to create magnificent quilts that were miraculous works of art, and inspired this haunting play filled with Gospel music that has swept the country. Likewise, it will stir North Coast Rep audiences long after the lights have faded.
