Super talent Billy McGuigan, known for bringing Buddy Holly and The Beatles to life on stage, announced the opening of McGuigan Arts Academy, a new twist on performing arts education and venues. The Academy’s mission is devoted to teaching life skills through hands-on studies in music, theatre, film, art and technology.

After serving as artistic director for four-and-a-half years, Kimberly Faith Hickman has announced she is leaving her role at the Omaha Community Playhouse (OCP) at the end of 2020. Hickman plans to return to OCP in spring of 2021 as a guest director for the highly anticipated production of Willy Wonka and to teach for OCPa??s Henry Fonda Theatre Academy.

Special COVID-19 safety precautions will be observed. Vocal auditions will be on the Playhouse's Hawks Mainstage. Dance skills will be evaluated at callbacks.

Once in awhile a musical comes along that strikes the right chord. Irish musician Glen Hansard and Czech pianist Marketa Irglova collaborated on a stage version of the 2007 film by John Carney. This deceptively simple story won a Tony Award for Best Book by Enda Walsh along with 7 more wins out of 11 Tony nominations in 2012, including Best Musical, Best Orchestration, and Best Direction. Its most familiar song, 'Falling Slowly,' won an Academy Award and the cast album captured a Grammy.

The Omaha Community Playhouse (OCP) has announced the recipients of the 2019/20 OCP Directing Fellowship. The 2019/20 OCP Directing Fellowship Class includes Steve Krambeck, Kathy Tyree, Katt Walsh, Breanna Carodine, Sharon Diaz, Brendan Brown, Robyn Helwig, Meganne Horrocks Storm, Sarah Klocke, Marshall Carby and Charisa Ramsey.

Terrence McNally took that story to the stage with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. Omaha Community Playhouse reprises that monumental musical from its own memorable run 13 years ago on its stage.

Alternative Programming events are free and open to the public, however free-will donations of any amount are crucial to continuing adventurous programming.

This production is not only unique in its double casting, it's based in our neighboring state, Iowa. Here is a story that's near and dear to our hearts. But how will the Playhouse manage two Francescas and two Roberts? I spoke with the director, Kimberly Faith Hickman, and the leads, Angela Jenson Frey and Thomas Gjere, and Mackenzie Dehmer and James Verderamo to get their take on the process.
