Review: MAY 35TH, Southwark Playhouse Elephant
It’s a sophisticated manifestation of human activism that’s unafraid to display shared trauma and address the threat of authoritarianism. An ode to dissidents and a celebration of the legacy of those who were brutally murdered during the demonstrations and whose deaths have been weaponised to further hatred, at this point in time, the show is a cry for help. The team openly ask for international support in remembering and demanding answers: Chinese history is being erased officiously under our own eyes.

Stage June Fourth will present May 35th, a celebration of resistance to authoritarianism and commemoration of those who died in the pro-democracy protest at Tiananmen Square based on real life stories. Written by Candace Chong Mui Ngam and directed by Kim Pearce, running at Southwark Playhouse Elephant, 29 May – 1 June.

Hong Kong has been convulsed by an ongoing protest movement which has increasingly been seen as a last stand for its semi-autonomy from China since March 2019; a year which also saw the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre and the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Solidarity movements have formed across the globe, including repeated gatherings of up to 4,000 people outside the Chinese embassy in London.

A new play by British East Asian playwright and actor Daniel York Loh, Forgotten is inspired by the incredible yet little known story of World War One's Chinese Labour Corps.
