BIO

Kila Kitu is a critically-acclaimed actress with stage credits across the country. Once introduced by Bob Mondello to actor Derek Jacobi as "the future of classical theater", Kila is known for the depth of character and humorous insight she brings to her roles. The child of an English teacher, Kila began reading Shakespeare at age 10, fostering a long-standing love affair with the Bard. While studying with the Shakespeare Theatre at the Lansburgh Conservatory in Washington, D.C. , Kila was seen by directors at the Washington Shakespeare Company and given her first professional job. Not long after, she was invited to join the prestigious company. Kila worked with WSC and several other companies, earning praise from audience members and critics until a year-long tour took her away from D.C. Now residing and working in film & television in Los Angeles, Kila still supports the theater community as an active actor/director known for re-inventing traditional theatre works with edgy, multi-cultural themes.

Golden Globe award-winning actress and playwright Regina Taylor is this year's recipient of the Distinguished Achievement Award at the 14th Annual Texas State Black and Latino Playwrights Conference Sept. 12-18 at Texas State University. A tribute to the native Texan will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, in the Performing Arts Center Recital Hall.
