Seattle's Book-It Repertory Theatre Makes a Comeback with a World Premiere
After closing its doors in 2023, Seattle’s beloved Book-It Repertory Theatre is making a surprising return. The theatre, known for bringing literary works to life on stage for over three decades, has been revived by its original founders, Jane Jones and Myra Platt. However, this new chapter comes with a twist — they will no longer operate as a full-scale producing company.
BWW Review: Seattle Public Theater's ADMISSIONS Tackles White Privilege with Humor
As a white man I can recognize the privilege that has been afforded me throughout my life. That's not to say I didn't work hard for what I've achieved, nor to say I haven't had hard times, but that underlying privilege has always been there. But is recognizing your privilege enough? How far do you go to counteract it? Do you accept it when it's presented? Do you resent it when it works against you? These heady questions are at the center the Joshua Harmon's comedy a?oeAdmissionsa??, currently playing at Seattle Public Theater. You read that right, comedy. Just like his previous hit a?oeBad Jewsa??, Harmon manages to tackle some hot button topics and spin them so you might not notice you're thinking about them since you're laughing so hard.
BWW Review: Book-it's Raw Look at Opioid Addiction in AMERICAN JUNKIE
With any luck most of us will bypass any connection to opioid or heroin addiction. I know going into Book-It Repertory Theatre's current production of Tom Hansen's "American Junkie", I knew nothing of that world except what you might catch on TV. But what this gritty memoir and gripping performances do is give a much more intense and visceral look into this world while still mixing in humor and hope making this a fascinating ride.

Adapted by Jane Jones and Kevin McKeon and directed by Jones, Hansen deftly balances a raw story about the path that leads to self-destruction with wry humor and hope. A tight, 90-minute ride through Seattle's music scene during the grunge era, American Junkie looks at the man behind the addiction and takes a hard look at the power heroin and other opioids have on people's lives.

BWW Review: Book-It and Café Nordo's THE MALTESE FALCON Makes a Killer Night
It was a cold night in the City of Emeralds. The kind of cold where your words just hung in the air as you spoke. Lucky for me and the other patrons of Cafe Nordo, the doors would soon open. Once inside a sultry dame looked me up and down and uttered the word I'd been waiting all night to hear, "Name?" Then another dame led me to my table plied me with drinks and food and thus began my journey into Book-It Repertory Theatre's sumptuous mystery dining experience of Dashiell Hammett's "The Maltese Falcon". An experience that may not make me wealthy as the only falcon I found was a gold dusted cookie (which was delicious) but I certainly left the place richer after having seen one of my favorite Nordo and Book-It shows to date.

BWW Review: Book-It's WHAT WE TALK ABOUT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT LOVE Elicits No Love
From the title of Book-It Repertory Theatre's current production, “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love”, you might think this could be a lovely and romantic date night possibility. Well, nothing could be further from the truth as this collection of four Raymond Carver stories seem to focus on the more mundane, banal and vicious elements of relationships and come across more like Carver exorcising his own demons. So not only is it someone else's therapy on stage but on page as well and was, frankly, boring.
