Crowded Fire Theater's 2023 Matchbox Play Reading Series Comes To The Potrero Stage This Month
Crowded Fire Theater (CFT) announces the return of its Matchbox Reading Series, featuring new plays by lily gonzales, Humaira Ghilzai & Bridgette Dutta Portman, Eugenie Chan, and CFT's 2021-23 Resilience & Development (R&D) Lab playwrights Star Finch, A-lan Holt, Maria Jenson, and Lisa Marie Rollins. This year's Matchbox is presented in partnership with Golden Thread Productions, Shotgun Players, and Playwrights Foundation, with support from the Gerbode Foundation.

In the end, it is largely the combination of sensitively-selected detail and poetic diction on the one hand, and the big-picture view of various interlocked social problems that makes the show so extraordinary. In that big picture, the problems are too pervasive, too ingrained to surmount, and well-intentioned people trying to escape those problems will probably fail. In the end, the play suggests, we are much more the product of the forces that shaped us than of our own volition.

Sarah Ellen Stephens delivers a passionate, nuanced performance as Amina, a black Cleveland police officer whose relationship with a fellow, white officer is dealt a huge blow when a late-night confrontation with a suspect leads to a shooting, under murky circumstances. Playwright Kevin Artigue does an admirable job of laying out the complexities, leaving enough room for all of us to contemplate how easily even the best of intentions can implode.
Theaterworks Hartford to Stage NEW WORK FESTIVAL
TheaterWorks Hartford is thrilled to present the 2022 edition of its New Work Festival. This free festival, running May 16–22, explores and celebrates new voices in American Theater. With workshops, a panel discussion, and talk-backs—both in-person and online—the New Work Festival strengthens TheaterWorks Hartford’s commitment to the development of important new plays. The Contemporary American Theater Festival has been a beacon for new plays since 1991. Housed on the campus of Shepherd University, CATF has earned a reputation as one of the country's top festivals for new plays. Producing Director Ed Herendeen, who founded the professional theater and lead the organization to its well-respected status, announced his retirement effective this December.

The Contemporary American Theater Festivals at Shepherd University, named one of the top professional new play festivals in the country, has coined the term “playcast” to describe the audio dramas of their 2021 season. This summer, they produced two playcasts: Sheepdog by Kevin Artigue and The House of the Negro Insane by Terence Anthony.
