Review: SOJOURNERS at Round House Theatre
by David Friscic - Sep 19, 2024
Nigerian ancestry, and American ideals clash, merge, and play off each other in Sojourners by playwright Mfoniso Udofia -this deeply moving play is part of the epic nine-play Ufot Cycle which follows a Nigerian American family through many cycles of life and generations. This production, presented by the Round House Theatre, quite obviously portrays ancestral themes/American values/assimilation, etc. but I feel that it concurrently succeeds as a theatrical meditation on how a strong central “survivor” can succeed in a world by intersecting with others to create bonding and community within a broken and challenging environment.
Review: THE MOORS at Faction Of Fools
by Roger Catlin - Jul 24, 2024
The Faction of Fools Theatre Company specializes in the arcane form of the Italian Renaissance, commedia dell’arte, with elaborate masks, exaggerated movements and a kind of extreme reading of what often are classic texts. The troupe’s “Commedia Romeo and Juliet,” revived earlier this year, was a good example of that.
Review: OVER HER DEAD BODY by Pinky Swear Productions at Theatre J
by Mary Lincer - Jul 12, 2024
Pinky Swear has revived its 2016 production of Over Her Dead Body for this year's Capital Fringe. The musical revue surveys murder ballads (yes, that is a thing) which originated in Scotland and England during the 16th century before emigrating to Appalachia and obtaining improved orchestration (Americans organize mean fiddle, guitar, mandolin bands). but the plots of each of these songs resembles a fellow ballad: boy meets girl/boy and girl are in love/girl gets murdered--not really grislier than what's streaming these days, but with real, live musicians.
