WINTER SONGS ON MARS Celebrates Koliada At La MaMa
On December 21, La MaMa will present Yara Arts Group in 'Winter Songs on Mars,' a world music theater event celebrating Koliada, a winter ritual of the Carpathian Mountains. There will be two performances: at 7:00 PM and a special show for schools and children at Noon in La MaMa's Ellen Stewart Theater, 66 East 4th Street. The program, directed by Virlana Tkacz, will include the traditional Hutsul koliada and an 18th century Ukrainian Nativity play, as well as winter songs from around our planet. The musical director of the show is bandurist Julian Kytasty. Performers will include actors of Yara Arts Group and members of Nova Opera from Kyiv.

Pan Asian Repertory Theatre to Present SAYONARA at Theater Row's Clurman Theater
PAN ASIAN REPERTORY THEATRE continues its 38th Season with a re-imagining of the epic musical, James A. Michener's SAYONARA. This classic story of romance and the power of love to overcome the conflict between two clashing cultures, the US Military and a world-famous all female Takarazuka dance theatre, has a book by William Luce, lyrics by Hy Gilbert, music by George Fischoff, and is adapted from the novel by James A. Michener. Directed by Tisa Chang, with choreography by Rumi Oyama, and musical direction by Sarah Brett England; the production will begin previews on July 5, 2015 and run until July 26, 2015 at the Clurman Theatre at Theatre Row (410 W 42nd Street between 9th and Dyer). The official opening is on Thursday, July 9 at 7:30PM.
Yara Arts Group Adds HITTING BEDROCK to Season
With a decisive battle mounting in the Eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, Yara Arts Group has chosen to replace its upcoming production of 'Dark Night Bright Stars,' a play based on the friendship of a Ukrainian painter with an African-American actor in 1858, with 'Hitting Bedrock,' a new work based on first-person testimonials of refugees from Donetsk and people stranded there. La MaMa E.T.C. will present the piece February 20 to March 8 in its First Floor Theater 74A East Fourth Street, Manhattan. Virlana Tkacz directs.

'Dark Night Bright Stars' by Yara Arts Group, directed by Virlana Tkacz, recreates the meeting of Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861), the great Ukrainian poet and painter, and Ira Aldridge (1807-1867), the African-American actor who was much honored in Europe. La MaMa E.T.C. will present the American premiere of the work February 20 to March 8 in its First Floor Theater 74A East Fourth Street, Manhattan.

'Fire. Water. Night' by Yara Arts Group adapts spring and summer rituals into a World Music Theater piece that moves throughout the lobby, risers and playing areas of La MaMa's Ellen Stewart Theatre, reveling in the imagery of the spring thaw, of awakening forests and of midsummer fire rituals. The work, conceived and directed by Virlana Tkacz, interweaves performances in English and Ukrainian, including fragments of Lesya Ukrainka's verse drama, 'Forest Song,' poetry from Native American, Canadian and American authors, dance and song. It features a score by electronic music composer Alla Zagaykevych, traditional ritual songs from Ukraine and raucous dance music by Toronto's Lemon Bucket Orkestra. La Mama E.T.C. will present the work tonight, June 7 to 16. The experience is highly visual and musical and is completely accessible to all audiences.
