Few American composers have been as influential as Stephen Sondheim, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 91. His large catalogue, with subjects and settings that vary from a modern single man navigating social relationships among his married friends to a murderous pie-shop keeper in Victorian London, to an amalgam of fairy tales, is widely performed and much beloved around the world.

This evening, the 2023 Helen Hayes Awards took place at The Anthem on the District Wharf, with over 1,600 theatre-makers and theatre supporters in attendance. Esteemed Washington theatre artists Naomi Jacobson, Erika Rose, Holly Twyford, and Christopher Michael Richardson hosted an evening showcasing the vibrant and diverse community of professional theatre artists in the Washington region.

The Keegan Theatre is presenting a moving and sensitive production of composer William Finn’s Elegies: A Song Cycle. This is a work of disarming autobiographical elements that underscore Finn’s alternately quirky and elegiac lyrics. Finn’s music is shot through with a sense of longing and pain abetted with a sense of holding on to whatever one can grasp at in times of despair and loss.

NextStop Theatre Company has announced the cast and creative team for the Broadway musical adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic Little Women. The captivating musical will officially open NextStop's 2022/23 season, which also marks the company's 10th professional season of theatre.

BWW Review: YOGA PLAY at Keegan Theatre
For Keegan Theatre's regional première of Yoga Play by Dipika Guha, Set Designer Matthew J. Keenan provides a sleek, beige unit set onto which Jeremy Bennett's projections shine, pop, narrate, move, and comment. (Be sure to read the changing smoothie descriptions in the Jojomon canteen.) Cindy Landrum Jacobs dresses the set with useful objects which multi-task effortlessly, and Alberto Segarra's lights unify everyone's work. Sound Designer Dan Deiter lets the audience down once in Act I when a phone conversation with a character's mother is garbled and plot points are thus muffled. Otherwise, a very complicated sound plot enhances the production. Shadia Hafiz' costume choices suit southern California corporate offices and yoga studios everywhere.

The new schedule will feature an eclectic array of four new, smaller productions, which have been conceived to better meet and serve the company's two equal objectives of bringing live theatre back to the Dulles Corridor, while simultaneously protecting the health and safety of the community.
