OPERA America, the national service organization for opera, has welcomed a new class of six board members that includes creators, administrators, artist managers, and opera company trustees. They join the Board of Directors under the ongoing leadership of Chair Carol F. Henry, esteemed philanthropist and founding trustee of Los Angeles Opera.

Five outstanding young artists have been selected to participate in Opera Columbus' annual Cooper- Bing Competition. The operatic vocal competition drew a record-breaking pool of 270 submissions, attracting talent from around the world to compete for the grand prize of $10,000.

Victory Hall Opera Presents BREAKING THE SOUND BARRIER A Deaf Opera Workshop
Victory Hall Opera, in conjunction with UVA's Disability Studies Symposium, will present a one-of-a-kind exploration of Deaf Opera: 'Breaking The Sound Barrier: Deaf Opera Workshop,' featuring scenes from Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites. The performance will take place in Charlottesville at Old Cabell Hall on the campus of The University of Virginia on February 27th at 7pm. Admission is free.

Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand... and his name is Shrek. Performances July 12th thru the 14th at the Hilliard Darby Theatre in the Hilliard Darby High School, 4200 Leppert Rd., Hilliard, OH. The 2018-2019 Renee Fleming VOICES series continues withJamie Barton on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. in the Terrace Theater. Accompanied by pianist Kathleen Kelly, Barton's one-night-only recital will feature classics from Haydn, Strauss, and Ravel while showcasing the voices of women, including works by composers Nadia and Lili Boulanger and Americans Elinor Remick Warren and Amy Beach. Barton's performance also features Love After 1950, a contemporary song cycle by Libby Larsen that uses offbeat vocal styles like blues, tango, and honky-tonk to evoke different moods. Tickets for this program are $49-$69.

As with any librettist Peter Sellars and composer John Adams collaboration, what we are creating is not traditional opera. In this case, it almost feels like a kind of ceremony-a celebration of this land and a display of mourning for what happened here in the desert 75 years ago.
