BIO

Kate Flatt trained at the Royal Ballet School. She began her career as assistant choreographer to Leonide Massine, whilst making new works for choreographic groups in ballet companies. She is a Churchill Fellow, a Rayne Award winner and received a Royal Society of Arts Award for research into traditional dance forms across Eastern Europe. Her career currently spans a wide field, nationally and internationally, and includes ballet and contemporary dance works, film, opera and musicals, including the original musical staging for Les Misérables (1985) at the RSC, in the West End and beyond.

Opera includes: her choreography for Andrei Serban’s Turandot, frequently revived at the Royal Opera. She created the dances for the acclaimed Phyllida Lloyd production of Gloriana for Opera North and the Emmy Award-winning film of it. Also, productions of Carmen (Bastille and in Orange), La Damnation de Faust (Châtelet, Paris), the South Bank Show Award-winning Peter Grimes (Opera North), Betrothal in a Monastery (Glyndebourne) and Carmelites and Verdi’s Requiem (English National Opera).

Film includes: Chaplin, Restoration and The Avengers.

Television includes: co-devising and choreographing The Dancing Room, a dance film for BBC2, short-listed for the IMZ Award in Lyons (1995).

Theatre includes: Albert Speer, Power, Three Sisters, Dream Play and Ends of the Earth (NT), ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore, Dr Faustus, Skellig and The Skin of Our Teeth (Young Vic), Hamlet (Old Vic), The Kreutzer Sonata (Gate), The Merchant of Venice (Myeondong Theatre, Korea) and Fiddler on the Roof (Sheffield, West End).

More recently, she devised and directed UK tours of Soul Play, a theatre-dance piece, and Songs from a Hotel Bedroom, based on Kurt Weill’s American songs. A new project, The Ballroom of Joys and Sorrows, is in development. Kate teaches choreography at the Royal Ballet School.

Watford Palace Theatre Announce Freelancers Season

In October Watford Palace Theatre announced they had successfully received support from the Culture Recovery Fund. This will enable the venue to re-open their doors to the local community safely and start to bring their cultural offering back to the centre of Watford.
