David Bennett is now six years into his job as general director of the San Diego Opera Association. When hired, he faced shaky finances, a loss of major donors, and huge turnover in the membership of the board of directors. The new board hired him with the understanding that downsizing and reinvention of the organization were his priorities. Then, after getting off to a surprisingly good start, Bennett had the forced restrictions of COVID-19 to contend with. Perhaps a biblical plague of locusts is next?

The San Diego Opera Announces Strong Start to Crowdfunding Campaign

On Tuesday, the San Diego Opera announced that its crowdfunding campaign has brought in $328,475 since last Friday. Edward Wilensky, the Opera spokesman, said that 544 households had pledged an average gift of $604 as of mid-afternoon Tuesday.

According to James Shapiro's book, A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare: 1599, the Globe was built with timber that was filched in the dead of night from The Theatre in Shoreditch, transported in the middle of winter to a waterfront warehouse, and ferried across the Thames River the following spring.
