Review: THE NUTCRACKER, Royal Opera House
The world can often seem so grey at the moment, so any opportunity to step into the light is most welcome. There can be few festive shows that ignite such a sense of wonder and delight as the Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker. If the festive season is all about tradition, then Peter Wright’s 1984 production, modelled on Lev Ivanov’s 1892 ballet, is exactly what any ballet lover wants to see.
The Royal Ballet Celebrates Christmas With The Return Of THE NUTCRACKER
Nothing says Christmas quite like The Nutcracker, and this year The Royal Ballet celebrates the festive season with this perennial favourite. Peter Wright's much-loved production of the 19th-century classic received its premiere in 1984 and has become a staple of The Royal Ballet's repertory.
BWW Review: CONCERTO/ENIGMA VARIATIONS/RAYMONDA ACT III, Royal Opera House
The first mixed bill of the season sees the Royal Ballet celebrate a diverse cross-section of 1960s productions - from the clean and tightly choreographed Concerto, to the luscious opulence of Raymonda Act III (so commonly seen as a standalone piece). The two are separated by some picture-perfect Ashtonian charm with Enigma Variations.
BWW Review: THE FIREBIRD/A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY/SYMPHONY IN C at Royal Opera House
A mixed bill of true contrasts is served up by the Royal Ballet for the last run of performances of the 18/19 season. From the tempestuous Firebird set to Igor Stravinsky's seminal score, Ashton's quaint and quietly heartbreaking A Month in the Country, to the bold and technically exposing masterclass of Balanchine's Symphony in C.

The Birmingham Royal Ballet's Shakespeare season opened with Frederick Ashton's The Dream, originally choreographed to celebrate the 250th anniversary of The Bard's birth, and now restaged to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. The bill is completed by A Month in the Country, an Ashtonian adaptation of Ivan Turgenev's 1855 play, and widely regarded as one of the choreographer's masterpieces.
