Review: WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO ALL THAT BEAUTY? A Deeply Moving Offering at CATF
by Andrew White - Jul 22, 2024
Playwright Donja R. Love refers to 'Beauty' as an offering, in the spiritual sense of the word; and it truly is one of the most uplifting cycles, in times of trouble and misunderstanding, we are likely to see. Review: A Stunning WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO ALL THAT BEAUTY? at Contemporary American Theater Festival
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Jul 10, 2024
This is an important play, to be considered a peer of Angels in America and The Inheritance, a sweeping two-play multigeneration account of the impact of AIDS on the American gay community -- with the difference that this one focuses on men and women of color. It may suffer from some lack of restraint and melodrama, but it makes up for it with the depth and breadth of its consideration, the power of the acting, and the force of its polemic concerning the beauty of the gay community and its members, the care shown by its caretakers, and the importance of creating records. You could feel the love in the play, and fall in love with the characters.

Starring Deborah Ann Woll and James Udom as the headstrong pair Petruchio and Katherine, a lovely set, and a sense of playful fun, the show is successfully turned into a fun romantic comedy, though never fully overcomes the questionable behavior built into the script. Paying at The Old Globe under the stars in the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre through July 10th
