BIO

Originally from Atlanta, GA, Joshua Blake
Carter joined Giordano Dance Chicago in 2009 as a
member of Giordano II. He then danced for seven
seasons with the GDC main company where he had
the opportunity to work with a multitude of artists
while touring nationally and abroad. Since 2013,
Joshua has been the Director of Giordano II and was
recently named Operations Manager for GDC.

Joshua earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance from
the University of Arizona, where he began to find his
choreographic voice. In 2009, he was selected as the
winner of Wonderbound's (formerly Ballet Nouveau
Colorado) national choreography competition, dancemakers2.0, and in the spring of 2013 he was one of six winners commissioned to
create a new work for DanceWorks Chicago's DanceMoves choreography competition. Later in 2013, Joshua was awarded the Producers' Panel Prize by the Ruth Page Foundation for his work, Ripen, as part of Dance Chance: Redux 5.0. His works for Giordano Dance Chicago and Giordano II have been called “most entertaining” by Hedy Weiss (WTTW), and “fresh and cohesive... honest and genuine” by HalfStack Magazine. Other commissions include Missouri
Contemporary Ballet, Nomi Dance Company, Visceral Dance Chicago, Artifact Dance Project and Glendale Community College (Artist in Residence 2012), as well as an original work for Embarq with artists from The Joffrey Ballet. Additionally, Joshua created the finale for the 2016 event Sing! featuring Elton John. As a dance educator, Joshua travels throughout the country
and is on faculty at several Chicago dance institutions.

BWW Review: NEWSIES at Paramount Theatre

Paramount Theatre's production of DISNEY'S NEWSIES THE MUSICAL, directed by Jim Corti, offers a spirited, heartfelt take on the popular Tony Award winner. Originally a 1992 Disney movie musical, the cult favorite has attracted a whole new fandom since the stage adaptation opened on Broadway in 2012, with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and book by Harvey Fierstein. Based on the true story of the 1899 New York City newsboys' strike, NEWSIES is best known for its rousing tunes and jaw-dropping dancing. With music direction by Tom Vendafreddo and choreography by Joshua Blake Carter, Corti's production nails these essential elements, while the cast give moving, layered performances as the ragtag band of brothers who faced down the giants of the 19th century press.
