Birth Place: Atlanta, GA
Joseph Lorenzo Wise was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He has been involved in music and the arts since an early age. His first instrument was piano, but he soon switched to violin and showed promise as a young violinist. Joseph then attended the Northside School of the Arts where he discovered acting and singing and he went on to appear in numerous musicals and plays. Most notably as the Emcee in "Cabaret", which resulted in his first professional contract in "R.S.V.P. The Cole Porters". He also received notoriety for his portrayal of Purlie Victorius Judson in the musical "Purlie" and George M. Cohan in "George M". In a strange twist of casting, Joseph also portrayed Madame Armfeldt in a production of "A Little Night Music". There are still rumblings about that performance many years later on Facebook and in an upcoming book about musical theater.
In New York, Joseph studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and studied privately with reknown voice teachers, Henri Jacobi, Chloe Owen and Mary Singer at the Carnegie Hall Studios. He also studied dance at Alvin Ailey Dance Theater and with tap legend Henry LeTang. After graduating from the American Academy, Wise landed a featured role in "On the 20th Century" the Comden and Green, Cy Coleman musical directed by Broadway wizard Harold Prince. He is featured on the original cast album which is now available on CD SONY/Broadway and has released "LIFE IS LIKE A TRAIN" the song written exclusively by Cy Coleman for the Four Porters as a pop dance record on CD Baby. "TRAIN" has been in the Top 10 for several weeks on CD BABY in the pop/rock category. Joseph also appeared in the national tour of 20th with Rock Hudson.
Joseph has also appeared at Lincoln Center in his original one man musical "Cruisin on the QE2" and has appeared on television on "As the World Turns" Jimmy Kimmel Live, "Men of a Certain Age" and Saturday Night Live. On film Wise has appeared in several notable projects which include Dreamgirls, Bobby and Along Came Polly and was recently spotted in Steve Harvey's "Think Like A Man" where he played the owner of an expensive Mercedes Benz.
Joseph is now a featured soloist at Founder's Center For Positive Spirituality and has performed with the Jubilee Singers of Los Angeles.
