Now that New Year's Eve celebrations are behind us, my favorite time of the theatre year is upon us. In late winter and early spring, theaters all around Houston start unveiling their upcoming seasons, in hopes of keeping current season subscribers and gaining new ones. Kicking off this annual season of unveiling is Gexa Energy's Broadway at the Hobby Center 2014-2015 Season announcement.

Despite the hype of the much anticipated musical, which is believed to have Broadway aspirations, the production was received with little enthusiasm by many critics (revisit the Review Roundup here). Now, the movie and show's scribe, Douglas Day Stewart, has taken to the media to defend the piece in an open letter in The Australian against their negative reaction.

Producers Jacobsen Entertainment in association with Lionsgate and Magic Hour Productions announced that Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story On Stage has joined the Millionaire's Club with box office receipts totaling $1,095,062 for 8 performances for the week ending October 26, 2008.
Broadway Bound DIRTY DANCING to 'Dance' into the Neil Simon Theatre in 2009?
Daily Variety is reporting that the international stage hit Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story On Stage could be making itself a home on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre after current resident Hairspray takes its final bow. While no official plans have been confirmed, inside word is that 'Dancing' looks to be eyeing the space for it's Rialto bow. There is no word on an exact date for a Broadway opening, but insiders predict a Fall 2009 start for the film to stage tuner.

Movies on stage are all rage and Dirty Dancing seems well suited for adaptation. The romantic classic of the 80s has an amazing soundtrack, wild dance numbers, and a constantly growing fan base. The staged version is perfect for purists. It's the same story, same music, and same dancing all for a Broadway ticket price. Or you could spend less than $15 on the real thing.
Tickets on Sale for East Coast 'Dirty Dancing' Premiere in Boston 10/5
The international stage hit Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story On Stage will make its Pre-Broadway East Coast premiere at the Boston Opera House for a limited engagement February 7 through March 15, 2009.
