Review: WAITING FOR GODOT, Theatre Royal Haymarket
A country road. A tree. Evening. Two figures commiserate with each other’s woes. “Nothing to be done”. We have to wait 35 years to receive a really revolutionary new take on Waiting for Godot: Samuel Beckett’s estate still has too much power over any revival of the 20th century classic. James Macdonald’s starry cast is, obviously, the draw here: Ben Whishaw returns to the West End as Vladimir, the restless soul of the pair, while Lucian Msamati is the forgetful Estragon. It’s an excellent opportunity to see a handful of our most exquisite performers at work.
Review: A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE, Rose Theatre
Immigration and adapting (or not) to a new homeland is as current a topic as it has ever been. In Arthur Miller’s 1955 play A View From The Bridge, we see the difficulties in casting off centuries of inherited tradition to adapt to a new social structure. Holly Race Roughan’s thrilling production brings out all the nuance and emotion of the text. It feels as fresh as it does familiar.

Review: SARAH, The Coronet Theatre
Oliver Reese, artistic director of the Berliner Ensemble, translates the tale for the stage transforming it into a one-man-show led by Jonathan Slinger. But do we need another white man’s poor-me point of view in 2022? The book has its merits, as does the play, but what is this show trying to say? It’s difficult to pinpoint.

BWW Review: OLEANNA, Arts Theatre
An unflinching examination of power and gender roles told through the perspective of a student-teacher relationship that is unafraid to pose difficult questions of its audience.

BWW Feature: Five London Shows That Got Away
An ever-mutating virus has led to general uncertainty on and off the West End about the start-up of live performance. That shifting scenario in turn brings to mind some of the titles from this time last year that were sounding especially promising and that, with luck, will reappear at some point to make good on their potential.
