When asked about this tragic-comedy of the teenage experience of sexual awakening's Wedekind often referred to this show as the Child's Tragedy. As the central characters face the transition into adulthood they are faced with discovering what that means for them and how it will impact their self identity as too often this subject is not one that would be discussed with the adults of this society. As preconceived notions fade, and paradigms shift, the illusions are Shed and Melchior will have to come to terms with the consequences of his actions.
